My question about this is simple is it ok to just clone the first guitar take, or is it a must to actually record 4 tracks of the same thing with actual playing? Can you say use a quick delay and cab effects to create the desired sound?

No, it’s not ok to copy tracks. You have to put some effort into it. Unique recording – unique sound.

Usually, it’s pretty easy to notch out the fundamental tone/frequency with an eq. Make a narrow boost with a peak/dip eq band, sweep until you find it and dip it down. Or, do the same with a notch filter.

This is a serious endeavour, but I only need dynamic accuracy. I don’t care how it sounds. I will record it like a kit – all in one go. I don’t think crosstalk will be a problem with contact mics, but I have no experience with them.
I don’t wanna go the Roland V-drums route – the expense adds up quickly. And this is more of a fun project too. The ugliest kit on the planet, but hopefully it’ll sound great in the end. I’ve triggered drum samples from my keyboard for 20 years, and that works just fine. I’m doing this to get some variation in the typical studio day; spice things up a little.

    Thanks.

The Waves 1176 blacky plugin sounds more aggressive than the UAD equivalent, and with a tad more distortion. I love them both, but had to leave UAD TDM behind for obvious reasons. I also have a hardware UA 6176, and to claim that the plugins doesn’t sound good, is pretty surprising to me. Don’t believe the hype, that’s fine, but I trust my ears. And Waves SSL bundle and the CLA compressors bundle sounds great to me, and I use them on every song.

I found it. Note mapping > E-drums, and Pedal correction > More close no curve

BTW, the drums was recorded with a Roland V-drums kit and a TD20 module.

yeah, very fun indeed, but my only problem with it is that when i go to customize the drumbeats in protools, when i add new hits for some reason the volume is dramtically lower, i dont understand why…

Check the velocity. You can specify in the Preferences in PT the velocity you want when you pencil in notes.

Once that real bass is pumping it will make a nice quality lift.
Find a sound/kit that works great with the chorus first and in the verse try just using real dynamics to pull the listener “in”.
A second snare set up like some “real” drummers use,may be cool, this would give you a stronger or subtle change needed but the kit would still lock it together.
For instance the 2nd snare may be just the same as the first but undampened and the first may just be dampened(SHORTER).
It may be just Dryer verse an roomier chorus for the same kit.Rods might be worthy of a try,if you use brushes just keep em all the way.

Yes, a second snare is also a good idea. A snare that opens up in the chorus. Good advice. I usually ride the send faders feeding the FX busses a few passes during mixing, and more often than not I mix the chorus a little more roomy. A nice trick that also works well on snares.

    Thanks for sharing your ideas.

Give the ‘rods’ a try also. Maybe through the whole song. If you’re not familiar with them, they are thin rods (think shish kabob skewers) bundled together. They sound somewhere between brushes and sticks. They could work too.

Ah yes, the spaghetti bundle. I haven’t even tried those. Cool. That could actually be even better. Thanks.

Thanks again, Scott. Yeah, I want to keep it real and make it sound like a live band played it. That’s why I get these gigs in the first place. There is a pause between the 2nd verse and the 1st chorus, so it can be done. I could use brushes from intro through 2nd verse, and sticks for the rest of the song. Just have to experiment a little.

Stylistically, if I were doing something where I wanted to switch between brushes and sticks, I would make sure the kits sound really different. Maybe mono the verses with brushes and filter it for a lo-fi sound and then ‘open it up’ in the chorus with the sticks. There’s lots of ways to skin a cat.

I’m pretty sure that my clients would prefer a natural drum sound on this song, but to mono the kit could be cool. Thanks for your insight on this.

Thanks, Scott. It’s uptempo with a BPM of 153. Kick on 1 and 3, snare on 2 and 4. You know the kind.

I’m leaning towards Avatar for this song. It sounds awesome in the mix, but I’ll know more once I’ve replaced the horrible MIDI bass. I’m thinking of using brushes in the verses, and sticks in the choruses. Is this “normal”? I’m not very familiar with this genre.

I’m downloading the tutorials now. For some reason I just can’t seem to wrap my head around Superior properly. Looking forward to finally learn the chops.

McDSP’s CompressorBank, FilterBank and MC2000 are really nice plug-ins. Extremely good-sounding and versatile. They make, as the SSL bundle, DFH Superior and C&V sound “record-ready”.
