I wouldn’t bother with the gate or hi-pass in the case of SD3. I would use the envelope palette in the kit piece properties. Done right with the release curve and time, you can get a more natural taper of the ring, which in the context of a song is what counts perceptually. You can also simulate other muted effects with the envelope.

I use the envelope setting on the kit piece (as described) to get less room and ring, when necessary. It works great.

In the Pocket EZX and Hip Hop EZX have dead toms included.

I really like the song. Well written and produced. Great vocals as well. The drums sound natural and fit the style perfectly. It’s one of my favorite libraries from Toontrack. Carry On.

I do use an external. The issue for me is just general hassle of remembering to install everything manually and running out of installs for software.

Never had this issue (iMac crashing and restarting) before (in 25 years of being a Mac user)

I think Metal EZX drums are the same core drums used in Metal Foundry. If I’m not mistaken the “EZX” mix presets are available for SDX version, too.

    Your wish HAS been granted

I have also wished I had waited to purchase the SDX of some libraries, instead of the EZ version. I do however understand that the two version are menat for different customers: those who great drums with no fuss and those who want full control, so instead of looking at the EZ version as a “SDX lite” I remind myself of TT intent.

You can always hold off on the EZX version and wait and see if and SDX version follows. In the past the time between the two releases is significant. I waited for Roots SDX for over 2 years, after purchasing Jazz EZX. (it felt like that, anyway). By the time Roots SDX arrived Jazz EZX had made it’s money back! It was worth the wait because of the addition articulations and features.

Toontrack does an incredible job offering arguably the best Drum Software in the business. Their commitment to their customers and to making quality drums deserves applause.

Having said all that, I would also love to see more SDXs, namely Americana SDX!

@Toontrack: Break time is almost over… we want more drums!!!!!

Yes I think my issue with the toontrack libraries is that to try and get a genuine funk, disco, reggae etc short decay, tight drum sounds we are expected to use amplitude envelopes, gates, transient designers.
Maybe some of my favourite records used gates to get the funky tight snare sounds. But I doubt it.
Having a Clyde Stubblefield kit that sounds nothing like our favourite recordings of him like ‘funky drummer’ is disappointing.
    Jabos snare sounds closer.
I haven’t bought Superior Drummer or any Toontrack stuff yet. I love the idea of being able to sound like real drums from my Roland TD3KW. I will sometimes supplement a real acoustic hihat.
But from listening to the demos, I reckon there is still a big hole for the best most usable drum sounds for grooves that have shorter dampened snares etc.
Custom and vintage has some dampened snares.
I may be wrong, but I think a library with raw unprocessed but heavily and moderately dampened drums at a three different tunings is missing from the Toontrack sounds.
Go listen to James Browns ‘funky president’ or Johnny Osbournes ‘water pumping’ or most of the famous breakbeats.
All or mostly short punchy drums.
Maybe I am missing some tape saturation that I can add using my reel to reel. Or maybe I can get these sounds with envelopes and gates etc.
Go listen to Barry White and the love unlimited orchestra ‘Midnight an’
    Edwin Starr ‘Easin In’
    Cebu ‘The commodores’
    The Boss by James Brown

They all have a punchy snare with no ringing sound.
Maybe there are some of these sounds already in the Toontrack sound library. But from my listening to all the demos, I reckon they should make a library that gets closer to the short punchy drum sounds than Custom and Vintage does.
Like 12 different snares all dampened and heavily dampened with 2 or 3 tunings. Probably dry would be best or dry with some room mics.

    Johnny Osbournes

I have the Funkmaster EZX and I am able to get the “Funky Drummer” with little effort. For muted toms and damped snare sound you may want to listen to the Vintage Rock EZX.
