My bet is there are a whole lot of us out here who feel the exact same way. It’s a shame really. Toontrack has some really cool stuff but their reluctance to focus on customer service has got to be costing them money (I tell people all the time about their lack of real-time support). Other than reading through some of the fixes and responses (because I still own their product), I’ve pretty much given up on Toontrack. You’re not alone. Maybe they’ll get a clue one day?

    Nicholas,

I have the same set up, Presonus Pro-5, Windows 10 and SD3. We should connect outside of this if that’s possible to talk through different challenges. I’ve been able to work through quite a bit, however, there always seems to be some little obstacle popping up from time to time.  One of us may have an answer, whether that be SD3 or Presonas. If you’re interested you can send a message through my secure website and I’ll reply via email, http://www.richardblackett.com.

I never opened them at the same time. In fact, I almost never use SD3 outside of the DAW. I just happened to open it up when I fired up my system today and saw ‘Audio/MIDI Setup’ under Settings for the first time. That option does not exist when opening it up within the DAW. Changing it within the SD3 system (on EZbass and EZkeys too) made the difference within the DAW. The DAW was closed when I opened the EZ’s. The EZ’s were closed when the DAW was running.

I set each EZ program to 1024 and have my DAW at 256. I just know that did the trick on my system.

Try opening up SD3 software outside of your DAW. Under ‘Settings’ open up ‘Audio/Midi Setup’, change the buffer size to 1024. Apply and close. Then open up your DAW and give it a test. This solved the issue for me. Hopefully it does for you too.

NOTE: My sample/buffer within my DAW is set to 256 but I’ve changed it up / down and the popping / clicking is gone.

    Good luck.

YEAH!!!!!!! So the issue actually existed with SD3, EZbass and EZkeys but only within the DAW. Outside of the DAW each program on it’s own is ok. However, when I build a drum line (for example) outside of the DAW then drag and drop into the DAW the same problem exists.

Success…….I changed the sample size up (512) within the Toontrack software and the problem when away :). I was changing it within the DAW only. The sample size within the DAW is set to 256 and all is good.

Thanks for talking through this with me.

I have been having the same issue and I’m on a PC. Try changing the block size within the DAW. This hasn’t completely taken the popping away for me but it has been drastically reduced. Currently, I’m set to 256. 128 pops, 512 pops. For me, popping / clicking only happens with my Toontrack software (SD3, EZBass, EZkeys) so I am now looking into my toontrack settings. No luck so far though. I hope changing the block size works for you.

It got worse when I went from 256 to 512 and from 256 to 128. I changed the frame rate from 25 fps to 24 fps (the lowest possible in my system) and reverted back to 256. This poses the least amount of popping but it’s still very much there. Instead of every measure popping comes in about every other measure or every 3rd measure.

    Device = StudioLive Series III

    Device Block size = 256

    Sample Rate = 48.0 kHz

    Input Latency = 9.83 ms / 472 samples

    Output latency = 5.33 ms / 256 samples

I looked that up for Windows 10 I couldn’t find an exact definition but can confirm my computer audio volume is at 85% and the device is set to 48000 hz which matches my DAW (48.0 mHz). Does this not answer properly? This is a DAW dedicated computer so all other settings are set for performance (windows sounds off, it’s in airplane mode except when looking for updates or downloads).

Scott, I am relatively new to SD3 as well so if I’m telling you something you already know disregard. When you open the page that shows the drum set click once on the snare. If you look toward the top in the middle of the screen you’ll see a pulldown that allows you to change the snare only, sticks, brushes, etc. You can save this and it should show in the future.

One thing I do is separate the kick from the rest of the drum set making a separate kick track within the DAW. Then I’ll use a DAW EQ (yes, there is one within SD3 too but it has limitations) to hone in on the right tones for the set which will also move with the snare tone. I highly recommend placing the kick on it’s own track since it will require it’s own EQ / compression from the rest of the kit if you’re doing a complete song with bass / bass clef on a keyboard / etc. (low frequencies).

I am sure there a lot of other avenues that all work too but this is what I’ve learned and hope it’s helpful.

Ah ha! So the problem isn’t with me :). Thanks for testing it out.

    Thanks for the reply John,

I build my drum / percussion within SD3 via Presonus Pro-5. however, when exporting midi I do that through SD3 not Presonus. I have not messed with midi mapping but have browsed through the settings comparing the snare (which comes through perfectly) with the HH. Those setting match. As for active transforms in logic………….I must plead ignorance. I am not familiar with where this is or what it means. Hopfully, this could be the fix?

What is odd is the HH hits show up (visually) in the midi file but there’s just no sound.

Never mind! I figured it out :).
