I created this topic, and stated in the title “Cubase”, so the DRM for different DAWs is the issue, maybe you misunderstood. Anyway, I’m moving on.

Yeah, but no dice (yet). Still fishing, but worst case scenario, I’ll just carve out some time to do it myself.

No not so much for my external controller, as I can map that to whatever I want in a matter of seconds. My issue is when working in the drum editor, I like the sounds to match up with the names of the instrument, for example, What says cross stick For the main superior Drummer, Might be one of the Congress, or other percussion instrument, or even a rim shot, etc. All the drum instrument names lineup perfectly for the main SD three default drum, but other expansions don’t lineup so well with the names.

SD3 has several different expansions, and each has some instruments that others don’t. One in particular is the “Stories” expansion which also has a bunch of percussion instruments along with the drums.

I have the Stories kit, and it also  has percussion, so  it’ll be a pain in the butt to do. If I had more time off, I’d do it, but I play 6 nights a week, and do sessions daily. As soon as I can retire (maybe 2-3 more years) , I’ll be programming maps and things like that just for fun and challenge. If I hear of someplace that has them, I’ll let you know as well.

I have almost EVERYTHING Toontrack, and rave about these folks, but the selection of  nice “warm pads” is slim; in fact I had bought from other manufacturers to find bank of simple pads without zero luck. The best I’ve found (and use for my clients) is from a free VST(3) app called Labs. It comes with a free bank called “pedal pads”. A lot of my clients write ballads and when I use this with the EZKeys 2 Grand (or the Singer Songwriter), it is really gorgeous. Until Toontrack comes out with a really nice set of warm pads, I’ll use the free ones. When they do, I have no doubt they’ll be my “go to”.

Why is this PERFECTLY implemented in EZKeys, but is such a glaring omission here? Even with the part names that are here, where is the “Solo” block for the guitar solos (or any instrument), or “Fade”, “Vamp”, or “Modulation” section. Although these sections are delineated on the song’s lead sheet, when assembling the drums in an linear fashion, it is nice for your drum parts tto correspond with your lead sheet (or as we call them in Nashville, the “chart”). I know it’s not as simple as copying the section of code on the EZKeys app, and pasting it into SD3, but, I doubt it would be such a horribly tricky task to integrate the code. Really surprising for such a top shelf (and WAY ahead of the game) company.

Hope this helps, but in Ableton you can edit you CC data (Continuous Controller data), look for “sustain”, and draw an “off” command. I’m a Cubase guy, so you might have to check your manual for editing CC data. Again, hope this helps.

It depends on the styles of. The gospel and R&B, meaning, if your doing a 70s style R&B, it is freaking perfect, but if you’re doing anything that warrants a more electronic (or fairly heavy processed sound), then the NY kits would be a better choice. it’s the same for the gospel you’re doing; if you’re doing modern R&B styled gospel, then the NY kits “no frills punch”. If your doing anything from Casting Crowns, to acoustic Christian music, then you will be in heaven (no pun intended), especially the kits with brushes. Seriously they are difference between Jack Daniel’s, and a 40 year aged single malt scotch. Hobbyists won’t “get” the difference so much as those who’ve spent years in studios praying that drummers (who insist on using their own kit) have drums that sound this natural and good. It also goes without saying, but if you’re doing old Southern Gospel, you’ll love these (again, especially the brushes).

I do a song a day in my studio, and it constantly varies between rock, funk, blues, modern and traditional country. I’ll get a traditional jazz tune occasionally, but the SDX Jazz, and especially theEZX jazz kits are better suited by far.

Keep in mind, if you’re doing have a song that needs “some” to “‘significant” processing, I would start with the Start of the Art kits first, and “build upward” with effects, because you’ll find with these drums, you might not need as much processing as you thought.

Wow, what a crazy coincidence. Just yesterday, I found your YouTube channel! Eyebrows through your video library, and was knocked out with the amount of VERY USABLE content. My Studio is a “working Studio“ that I run full-time, and although the vast majority of my clients are songwriters and publishing companies out of Nashville, your lessons transcend the heavier rock you were using for your examples and demonstrations. Any person from any genre will do well to subscribe to your channel as well. Really impressive, and also, thank you for the answer to my “knucklehead“ question.

I hope this isn’t too off topic, but where are the shortcut key “preferences” file located? I am running SD3 in my studio on my iMac Pro, but I do all of my editing in bed at night on my Macbook Pro (I save all of my songs in Dropbox). I changed my shortcut keys one night on my laptop to correspond with my Loupdeck, so I have individual control of SD3 while in Cubase (so the shortcuts don’t conflict. Now I’m trying to find the preference file, so when I make change on one compute, I can send the preference file to the other computer.

    Thanks in advance!

Do you have a link to your music using EZ Keys? I would love to hear anyone using this in an upper professional manner. The instrument sounds are top shelf, but the patterns are so stiff and arpeggiated, that only the “simplest” parts would sit nicely in a track with other instruments, but when they’re that simple, you begin to think, “I might as well just play this section myself”. I have a working studio with clients to answer to, and with Superior Drummer 3, and even EZ Bass (sometimes), I am thrilled, but as soon as I try to use EZ Keys in any capacity, the track immediately becomes “amateurish”. The time it takes to modify the parts to make it sound closer to a good comping keyboard player, defeats the purpose.

Nice! I agree. Also, for now, the best Hammond B3s are either via Native Instruments, or the UAD Hammond. Both are pretty impressive, but if ToonTrack would just come out with one, it would blow everyone away in the same way they do with other instruments. I’m a firm believer in these guys.

I just had to update ALL of my ezkeys midi files. Usually, it, because of a recent mac os update, but seeing how there hasn’t been one, I’m wondering if….maybe…a new ezkeys is coming? Maybe they’re preparing midi file to work with new host? I’m afraid to hope.

No drummer can be sued for using the same beat Ringo Starr, or any other drummer used. The same for any rhythm instrument . These copyright issues are for the composition as a whole. The only singular issue would be the vocal melody (eight or more consecutive notes), or an instrument redoing a vocal hit as an instrumental (again, eight consecutive notes).
