Yes you can do that BUT you have to remember what you called that output in SD3. That requires either making notes about what’s what or keeping the SD3 gui open in a somewhat minimized fashion so you can do the renaming in your daw which in my case is PT. PT does make it a bit easier with the ability to set up track presets (I don’t use session templates). I have a track preset that contains SD3, all the aux tracks and audio tracks I need with third party plugins on each as needed and routing. It’s the creation from a fresh start that is an issue as well as those who don’t want to or know how to do track presets or templates in their daw.

I’m confused. Â To my knowledge, there are two ways of bringing an SD3 file into a DAW. Â One is by dragging a midi file into a midi track. Â The other is by dragging an audio file into an audio track.
In the drumjack52 quote above it says, “Why not just create a bunch of audio tracks in your daw and record the SD3 audio output there?” Â
This is suggesting that there is another option which I don’t understand. Â How would you create a bunch of audio tracks in your daw and record the SD3 audio output there?
Please explain. Â Thanks!

It’s very simple. Set SD3 to use multi outputs in the mixer. Create a number of audio tracks in your daw – as many as output streams you have from SD3. Assign the input field of each of those audio tracks in your daw to the appropriate mixer track from Sd3. Your question suggests that you’re a newcomer to audio recording and a daw. That’s not a bad thing – it’s just that you have a lot to learn. What I’m describing is basic audio recording and it doesn’t matter the source and the destination. Actually it even gets more basic than that – think about bringing an external source into a mixer in a live show. In this case the external source is SD3 and the mixer is your daw. What daw are you using?
Again you’d be better off doing your MIDI work in your daw and have that feed MIDI into SD3. I do that all the time.

Ken S:
What do you mean by ‘return track’? I have the MIDI in my daw (ProTools) feeding SD3 and recording the individual outputs from the SD3 mixer in PT audio tracks. No bounce.
Mark King:
I too would like to see Toontrack’s reply on this. At least in PT the tracks can be whatever the developer calls the tracks. So it should be able to have the selections in the track input fields be whatever one names/renames the audio output in SD3. PT doesn’t have anything to do with the names that are displayed.

When I recently began participating in this discussion I was concerned that there was something I was not aware of regarding this process and needed to learn more about.
One of the things I learned was that the process of bouncing files from SD3 to the DAW could benefit from some simplification. Â For example, it would be very helpful if there was a location in the bounce window where one could enter a unique file name for the bounced audio file. Â That would help take some of the mystery out of this process.
The current automated file name process produces a file name that is of little help when importing the file into the DAW. Â Having a file name entry location in the bounce window would help clarify this step.
Another related issue would be retaining unique file names when dragging files from the User Midi window into the Song Track. Â So, if one created a unique file name in the User Midi window, it would be retained when dragged to the Song Track in preparation for bouncing. Â Then, ideally it would be retained in the bounce window as well.
I hope that these suggestions can be considered in the next SD3 update. Â It would sure help in the work flow. Â Thanks!

Can we get this feature added to be able to rename them to something more intuitive and meaningful please as it was mentioned some time ago. Thanks, Andrew

One can rename the mixer channel from ‘x drum whatever’ to whatever you want. Can’t change the name in the grid editor though. Or the name in the kit view. Working in the latest revision of SD3. Strange they only went to a partial solution on changing names.

Yep, I installed the AU. I don’t see SD3 listed when I try to use it. I can go into AU>Native Instruments> etc. Other programs such as Kontakt, and others are listed.
Thanks for the quick response!
Where did you install the actual plugin? For third party au format plugins they should/must be in this path:
MacHD/Library/Audio/Plugins/Components

What kind of problems are you having? Did you install the AU?
jord
Also I wonder if the OP installed the program itself on his system drive? He mentions installing SD3 on an external drive; I know the samples can go anywheres but Macs like having the program itself on the system drive.

I work in PT as well and the answer to your problem is easy – the instrument track that has SD3 on it has the output of the kick drum and that IS aux 1/2. In the output field of that instrument track select ‘new track’ then when the track creation box comes up create an audio track (select stereo if you need a stereo track). A new audio track will be created with it’s input routing already set to receive the output from the SD3 instrument track that has the kick drum audio from SD3 which is the output from channel 1/2 of the SD3 mixer..
If you care to email me I can send you the PT track preset I use. I have everything set up so that the instrument track for SD3 and all the aux tracks and audio tracks and busses with any plugins I need are already on it. All I have to do is to recall that preset from the ‘new track’ dialog box and have like 15 PT tracks all ready to go.

Editing would not be an option live though as this was mentioned in the question. A simple option is another pad with only closed articulations on it.
Maybe edit the MIDI mapping in SD3?
