John you are right I dont know what i missed but yes it works as you described. Regarding the missing record button. super weird but yes i add new track and it does have the button. must be an obscure logic bug.

“Logic “does” have a Record enable/button”
i know but on this track there is no record button but on other tracks there is.

the solution was to create a logic Drummer track > change inst to EZD2 > import pt midi via EZD2 then to track
