How? I notice that a velocity of 127 results in an immediate choing. Any other value results with the same pre-recorded length just in a different volume. Which is not unexpected for velocity. I would fin it more intuitive if the mute articulations would react to a note off event.

After fiddling with a MIDI editor I found out:
Channel Aftertouch: any value >=65, but only if previous value <65
Polyphone Aftertouch: any value >=65, but only if previous value BEFORE note on <65
