There were several mics on that kick drum including an AKG C414 on the batter side. The mics were summed into a single channel. Most producers/engineers use some degree of processing whilst tracking.

That C414 explains much about the so-called clicky sound. As to summing every mic to one channel is why I like the way Death of Death & Darkness was recorded so I can manipulate each mic separately.

There isn’t an option for using a condenser mic or dynamic mic. I was looking for someone to chime in who has this particular SDX or knows anything about the recording of these samples in particular. I am curious if something has gone wrong in my download (and if I need to reinstall)

They recorded the library without using a condenser mic? Strange.

Yeah I get that… but it is the only kick drum out of all the libraries I have that sounds like it has been preprocessed, every other kick sounds like a raw kick drum. Even within this SDX it sounds preprocessed.  If you have the SDX then perhaps you might see where I am coming from?

You still don’t understand – the kick you’re on about is recorded in a totally different environment than any other SDX. Until Toontrack records every SDX in the same environment with the same mics and setup and producer they are all going to sound different. We’re at that mercy if you will. Live with it and if you don’t like clicky drop the levels on the condenser mic and just go with the dynamic mic.

Take it from someone who’s been on both sides of the glass – the sound all depends on the engineer and producer as to how the final product comes out. Add in the different electronics and all bets are off. Same setup with a different beater and the kick will sound different. Let’s not even get into the differences in heads.

It’s the DW maple in the D&D SDX. Both examples are the direct microphones in the default balance. So for D&D it is the condenser, 2 dynamic mics and sub. For Rock Foundry it is just the kick and Sub channels.

Two completely different drums. With two completely different recording setups and mics used in recording the SDX. Is bleed enabled?

Here’s a comparison of the green kick in Rock foundry with the maple kick in D&D. The green kick sounds preprocessed to my ears. Is that just me?

There is a difference between the 2. What exact kick are you using from Death and Darkness? Remember that each SDX was recording in different studios with different equipment. What mics are you using in each case? The large diaphragm condensers have a somewhat exaggerated high freq response compared to dynamic mics in drum use in the SDX’s. Not a fan of LDC’s for kick drums.

What mics are you using? If Rock Foundry is like Death & Darkness I’ve found the LDC mics to be a bit clicky sounding. I tend to back them off and go more for dynamic mics.

This is an incredibly easy change to make and to have it lagging for 2 years is in acceptable. This is just stupid.

It may seem simple to you but believe me it isn’t. Coding is not the easiest thing in the world and going in and revising things is even worse. Everything depends on everything else – change one thing and you can break something else. It’s not like changing a module in a Moog modular synth.

Thanks for your soon answer 🙂 I’m checking UVI Plate, Waves Abbey Road Plates and Arturia Rev Plate 140.

The Arturia Rev Plate is okay but not up there with the ones I mentioned. I have it. Something to watch out for if you go with the Arturia plugin you may want to look at the cost of the individual plugin versus going with their grouping of plugins. Some of their plugins are quite decent. Individual plugins from Arturia can run a good bit more in cost against getting a bundle.

There are a lot of plate reverbs and reverbs that can do plates and other types of reverb. I have 2 favorites. The first one is UVI Plate and the second is Abbey Road Plates from Waves. UVI Plate is really customizable – you can pick the plate material, size, orientation of the senders and receivers. The Abbey Road Plates models 4 plates at that famous studio. One of the plates has tube electronics. Neither plugin is super expensive.

If you don’t mind spending some bigger bucks I suggest taking a look at Liquidsonics’s wares.

Any progress on streamlining the installation/update process? Dreading moving to a new system…

    Operating system: macOS Ventura (13)

Unfortunately no movement on this. In another thread one of the people talked about an upcoming update but just to SD3. Maybe the installer will get a makeover as well. I like the system Arturia has with their installer with the ‘silent install’ option. Engage that and when there’s updates to multiple programs it updates them all with no fuss and the installer knows/remembers where you installed stuff as well.

You could try velocity and/or volume changes/ramps. I don’t do MIDI inside SD3 but in my daw so I don’t know how one could do it in SD3.

    @drumjack52,

I’m loading from an external SSD.

    I load the entire kit.

    OS 10.14.6, 2019 iMac

How much ram do you have?

Sorry for my english, yes i mean pan right left. Thank you!

Check the SD3 mixer for the panning. The various kit pieces are panned as to how they would be in a physical drum kit setup. Are you trying to do something different?

Where are you loading your samples from – a separate ssd or spinner drive? Are you loading the whole kit or streaming? What’s your operating system and computer?

The nag screen has NOTHING to do with any bugs you may or may not have. Get over it already! All the time and energy you’re wasting on this could be put to better use on other things that really matter.
