Having watched the video, it appears that he is cycling through the various kits within those four presets.

I don’t know if I can call myself new any more since I came full on board when SD3 was released. However, from what I have learned, I’d say November is where we prepare our metal to decorate our Christmas trees. And Toontrack is giving us to power tools to forge our metal.

Sadly for me, my metal month with D&D won’t be able to happen until the new year, but I can live vicariously through everyone else this month. Good thing that many of the other SDXs that I own are more than fabulous to carry me through Metal Month.

Death and Darkness was just released for Metal Month. Considering that they released three expansions this year, any more before the end of the year would probably be nothing short of a surprise. Even if they did, I am still aiming for D&D because it sounds amazing.

I would not buy an EZX for the MIDI. Even more so if I had the SDX version of the expansion. I would use the money to get the MIDI packs alone.

Why get the Hard Rock EZX if you’re going to get The Rock Foundry? From what I see, the EZX is pretty much a subset of the SDX.

I got the Hard Rock Grooves MIDI pack last year. It’s one of my faves.

I particularly like the Play Style Editor (it’s what sold me onto Toontrack since my EZ2 days). There are times when I am programming some rhythms, I will then engage the Play Style Editor wondering “what would the computer do”.

This is an Apple problem not toontrack. There’s a huge amount of programs that are now struggling with Catalina. Apple are the same with iOS as well. They are well known for cocking up operating systems.

Sorry, but the blame goes more on software developers than it does Apple. Developers are more known to use undocumented or deprecated APIs within the OS and this is what happens. Those are Catalina ready, which are very few, are the ones that didn’t stray into uncharted area within the OS.

Not to mention that this type of conversation has been a yearly occurrence for almost 20 years and it is well known within the music industry not to update the OS no earlier than four, maybe five, months after Apple releases an OS in order to allow the various issues to be worked out on both ends. The old saying goes: ride the bleeding edge, suffer a thousand cuts.

Both the Play Style Editor and Grid Editor will let you vary grooves on your SD3 track. The Play Style Editor uses a bit of “intelligence” when adjusting your pattern.

As far as the volume goes on your tracks, it is fine for raw tracks. You want as much allowable headroom as possible, and you don’t want the initial transients squashed or clipped and remain as dynamic as possible. Considering that you’re working with plug-ins within your DAW, you’ll probably be levelling off the dynamics and taming the transients, with  the variables if and how much depending on your genre of music, and making it sit within your song. Always keep in mind that it is far easier and less work to remove dynamics than it is to re-add them.

As for anything else, it really depends on your genre of music. All I can add at this point is know where you want to go within the context of your entire mix. Going for that killer drum sound may accomplish just that: kill everything else in the mix.

Can you raise the gate value of the aftertouch so that it will trigger with a more intentional press of the pad?

I do this on my Maschine controllers so that I don’t trigger a mute tail after hitting the pad hard.

Can it be done in SD3? How can it be achieved? — I was thinking to use an open hi-hat and then choke it (how?), but that is not life-like and not the same as this real-life drum technique.

The term I believe you’re referring to is a “bark”. You would use one of the open articulations, depending on the song itself (I’m usually using an Open Edge 4 for my stuff) followed by either by a Close Pedal articulation or a tight tip or edge articulation, depending on the groove.

I use ’em all the time between all of my drum software and apps. No problems here…

+1 on the groove editor, especially since Toontrack makes it less than ideal to work outside of its sequencer.

What makes it less than ideal? I go between SD3 and Logic/Reason rather seamless. They also have groove template quantization.

You can rename your groove in the User MIDI library, which is similar to EZD. Right click the groove and select rename in the dropdown.

First thing to check is to make sure that you are using the Logic Drum Designer MIDI map with Logic’s Drummer. if you’re still. It getting what you want, you can customize the MIDI map. It may also be worth noting, Logic uses MIDI CC1 for the hi-hat.
