Having just set-up S2.0 with my Yamaha DTXpress and been rather disappointed with the hi-hat response, I’m thinking about a new e-kit.
I analysed the incoming cc04 data from the DTXpress and noticed that there is not a smooth variation of values between 0-127, but rather a very coarse ‘stepped’ graduation from open to closed – maybe 3 or 4 unevenly-spaced discrete values.
Somebody local is selling a TD-6kx kit which is very tempting from many aspects, including many dual-zone pads, but if the hi-hat isn’t right I might aswell not bother. I have perused the forum but haven’t found a definitive answer: Will the Roland TD-6 with a FD-8 HH pedal be capable of outputing detailed value data on cc04 and hence take FULL advantage of S2.0’s HiHat functionality?
If not, does a pedal upgrade help or is any limitation in the TD-6 brain? the VH-11 pedal is mentioned often, but the TD-6 brain isn’t ‘fully compatible’. Whether that applies to just the internal sounds (I don’t care, obviously) or some other midi functionality is a mystery. And what about the FD-7?!
If anyone has experience of any of these combinations I’d love to hear from you. All I want is to be able to use splashy / half-open hats without the obvious switch from one sample to another as I slightly move the pedal. I’m guessing a TD-12 would be ideal, but that’s a helluva lot of moolah!! Thanks!
