SD 2 and reaper

hi newbie here so go gentle
I’m running SD 2 using a td-12 and doing some recording into reaper on a mac os 10.7. while I’m recording the sound I’m hearing through my headphones is nowhere near the quality of the sound when i playback the recording. i am not that savy when it comes to technology, being a drummer i see things and then i hit them
any tips would be appreciated, also are there any good tutorials anyone knows of dealing with setting up from the beginning as i have SD 2 a good while now and have never been able to get a good sound through the hphones

problem solved

it was actually the snare pad itself, the foam cone looked ok but wasnt triggering properly, so i stuck extra doubled sided tape under her and boom, thanks for all the help
