I just purchased EZDrummer 2, along with a few libraries. At first glance, I love the sounds, but I’m not impressed with the control. I’ve used Reason for a while now, and I absolutely love the control and MIDI editing capabilities. I can map out the drum tracks easily and I can export each part, individually, out to an audio file. This gives me great control over the mix, as I can adjust volumes of cymbals / snares / high hats / ghost notes individually and EQ / Compress / Apply Effects where it’s needed.
What I’ve found with EZDrummer is that I’m stuck with the overhead mix of cymbals, with zero control in the mix (other than hours of automation that still doesn’t give me individual control). I know that in a real environment, it’s all about mic placement and you don’t get that kind of control. But, I’m finding that I can’t get my mixes right without that control.
Reason, hands down, has the best MIDI editor and export function that I’ve seen. But, the drum kits are horrible (especially for metal). Has anyone experienced this issue, and if so, how did you overcome / workaround it? I feel like I just wasted $250 on EZDrummer & libraries.
I know that you can route drums to a unique track, but you’re still stuck with the combination of cymbals in the overhead track. I need control over each cymbal, which doesn’t seem possible with EZDrummer.
Thanks, in advance, for your input.
