Just playing around with this…
So far, it’s a pain, since you have to make sure the notes are on the right MIDI channel, depending on what kit piece you’re using to compose with.
On the other hand… it looks kinda cool. 😀

The other disadvantage is that there’s only 16 MIDI channels… so only 16 possible colors… so, mostly between all the cymbals, you kind of have to juggle priorities, depending on which sound library is loaded. And when you initially color them, you have to remember which color/kit piece is which channel number. But again… it looks kinda cool. 😀
This screenshot is showing my “minimal” notemap for the Custom & Vintage SDX for the note names on the left, the new colormap I made based on the Reaper 4.0 beta colormap, with the first column being “unselected”, second column “selected”, and the third and fourth “columns” being selected (white) and unselected (black) muted notes.
