I have decided to venture off into the world of e-drums for my home studio. I would love to build my own kit to save some money, but with an 8 month old and a new house to fix up, time is an issue. So, I have given myself a budget of 3K to hopefully buy a serviceable e-kit setup. By serviceable, I mean a good setup that will allow me to produce quality drum tracks that are as realistic sounding and feeling as reasonably possible. Dynamics are VERY important to me. I have looked at a few TD kits, and a couple of the Hart kits, but I have yet to find a set around town that I can sit down and try out. I’m also very green to the midi world, so I want a setup that will take advantage of the Superior 2.0 features, but simple enough for my small songwriter brain. Here are a few questions I have…
1. Is it mandatory to have a module to use SD with an e-kit?
2. Does the quality of module affect the performance and sound quality(dynamics,etc..) that is triggered from SD?
3. Does the quality of e-drum kit affect the performance and sound quality triggered from SD?
4. Will I need a midi controller?
If anyone has some recommendations on how to go about achieving what I’m looking for, I would greatly appreciate it. If my budget will not suffice my expectations, that’s okay. I would rather wait and get something that’s going to get the job done, than settle for mediocre production.
Thanks for the help!

Hi born2write77,
First of all, sorry for the delay…
1> Yes. The module is a part of the e-kit. If you buy a TD Kit, you’ll get the triggers, a stand and a module.
2&3> Basically, a module translates the strength of your hits to messages containing a note to play and how “loud” this note must be played (note number + velocity). The quality of a module determines how fast and accurate is the translation. We can say that it affects the performance quality then, but it doesn’t affect the sound quality.
4> A module is a MIDI controller.
3k is a nice budget and should suffice your expectations.
Best regards.
