New releases and tons of deals – all centered around one of our favorite themes: rock! Power up your songwriting toolbox!
As many others are saying, the Namm 2026 show will be the turning point or the end of the era of buying sample packs and replaced by AI tools including generative AI. A lot of owners are now trying to sell their acquired sample packs already knowing that they will become essentially dead weight in the future. Not sure where Toontracks will go with this but the writing is on the wall that sample paks are on the way out. My prediction is that AI will be the most talked about and promoted feature in most products dealing with music software production at Namm. I will probably keep my SDX and EZX samples at least for now but their value will seriously be eroded on the market. This will be true for almost all sample based companies so I am not trying to pick on Toontracks, who have produced stellar sample products. Since Toontracks have more or less been silent on what their future holds will wait and see how it plays out for them.
Yes, probably like the guitars stopped selling when the synths came out, and drummers went extinct when TR-808 was launched…
AI is all the rage at the moment, and only time will tell if it is proved to be an useful tool for some people in some areas, or just a bubble that will burst one day soon. I’m no expert and I don’t know. Probably it will be an useful tool for some people in addition to what they currently have. Other will do just fine without.
An AI researcher (from the University of Tampere, Finland) told me a couple of years ago that as AI companies use freely available material from the ’net to train their AI models, and as more and more of this freely available material will be AI generated, this will, in time, corrupt the AI. He was talking about language models, so I don’t know if this will happen with music generation AI.
Interesting times we’re living in.
Cheers,
Mwah
