How to get more of that “In Your Face” sound out of Superior Drummer

Hi, I’ve had this issue with superior drummer since the beginning.  No matter what I do, I can’t get the drums to have that modern in your face metalcore sound.  My main problem is with the snare.  I have the Area 33, death and darkness, metal machinery, metal foundry, progressive foundry, and rock warehouse expansions, so I know I have their best snares for the sound I’m looking for.  I’ve tried mixing them in SD3 and even using a wide variety of external plugins but no matter what I do, the snare still sounds too weak for my taste, regardless if it’s a regular hit or a rim shot.  I’ve also tried all of the presets in every expansion and none of them give me the sound I’m looking for.

A good example for the snare sound I’m looking for is in the “Modern and Massive” drum kit virtual instrument made by GetGoodDrums.  Honestly most of their snares and drums fit the sound I’m looking for but I love superior drummer and want to be able to use all of the expansions I’ve bought without having to import external sounds to enhance the sounds in superior drummer.

I will mention that I’m not pro at mixing but I have taken online classes and been doing it for over a year now.

Any help is greatly appreciated.

In addition to using Toontrack’s presets, you can buy the ones of Develop Device or Omega Station to name a few. Develop Device creates presets for modern “in your face” sound while Omega Station has some nice 90s kits.

One of the things that really sticks out in GGD that may be the reason you’re not getting your snares upfront is that they may be getting drowned by everything else in that frequency range. If everything is in your face, then nothing is really in your face.

Also make sure you are not overly compressing your snare. That will kill your dynamics. You can squash one of the ambient channels and use it under the snare to help bring it forward.

I have the same libraries and have no issues getting the snares in your face with them.
