Sorry for the pop-in as I am not an active member on the forum but I thought that I would share this as it has troubled me for longer than I care to admit.
The Problem: The DDTi and (I assume because they are the same box) Trigger IO send different MIDI notes for Hat Open and Hat Closed when you hit the pad normally used for Hi-Hat (Input 3 I think.) This may be useful for some applications and it never bothered me on Superior 2 but Superior 3 hates it. I could never get anything smooth going on with the Hats because the switch in MIDI notes just sort of glitched. I think that the reason S3 hates it is because the new (and mostly wonderful) e-drum mapper works–you can’t just assign multiple note #s to one pad anymore. In S2 I believe the work-around was to map both MIDI #s to Hi-Hat Edge (or tip) Control and S2 just saw the hits as coming from the same pad.
Solution: It finally occurred to me to just use a different input for the Hi-Hat pad! (duh) It seems really obvious now but I just was in the mindset that the Hi-Hat input was the only way to get the pedal and pad working together. Nonsense because the pedal is just sending CC to S3 so it doesn’t matter which pad is triggering the Hi-Hat Control. So I simply moved my Hi-Hat pad from Input 3 to Input 10 which I was using for my China and put the China into Input 3–Making sure that the note numbers on the module were the same for Pedal Open and Pedal Closed positions. Now everything works great! The Hi-Hat is very smooth from fully open to fully closed and the China is not affected whatsoever by the Hi-Hat Pedal–although it could be if you wanted to experiment with that.
Sorry if this has been covered a million times–there doesn’t seem to be a Search function for the forum(??) but it makes such a difference for me that it is worth getting flamed a bit either way.
For me the DDTi is the perfect solution because it keeps the “module” very stupid simple–(after getting the settings right I never touch it!), it works really well with my combination of Hart Dynamics Kick and Snare, Pintech Concertcast Toms and Alesis and Simmons cymbals but I have been using S2 while thinking about buying a different module just to resolve this stupid issue.
Hey thanks for the post, I can’t get input 3 to work on my DDTI at all. What settings did you select on input 10 or in superior drummer 3 to get the hi hat pad to change from open to closed hi hat sounds when the hi hat pedal is engaged or not? Thanks
