I believe you are thinking about it the wrong way.
While previewing MIDI Grooves from EZdrummer 2 – browser or Song Track – to drive your drum sampler/VI of choice, the above linked tutorial works as expected.
As soon as you drag MIDI to Pro Tools, you need to make sure the MIDI output of that Track is targeting the intended VI.
As always really, when you create an Instrument Track with a VI inserted, it’s just that Pro Tools automatically routes MIDI I/O to the first inserted VI on that Track.
