https://www.toontrack.com/product/roots-sdx-brushes-rods-mallets/  — actually this is SD… but presumably they could leverage some of this for an EZD expansion…

    meanwhile you have some expansions:

Don’t forget the Nashville EZX as well.

There are 3 EZXs with extensive brush samples: Big Band, Custom Shop & Jazz.  They all contain multiple brush articulations & MIDI files for swirls & drags.  As far as I know, none of the MIDI packs support brush articulations, but it would be nice if they came up with one.

depending on your DAW, you might copy and edit an expressionmap or articulation.artmap to add the brushes… 🙂 then maybe share it 😉

There a a few MIDI packs that support brushes. Roots MIDI Pack (derived from its SDX) has a number of grooves and swirls.

Not to mention that many MIDI packs can easily be adapted for brushes via Edit Play Styles and the Grid Editor. Packs like Americana and Country Grooves work really well with brushes.

Thanks Jord for your input.  I checked out Roots in the web shop and a lot of the grooves sound great with brushes (especially with velocity turned down), but I couldn’t find any MIDI grooves that contain swirl or drag articulations.  Can you name a family in Roots that contains these?  Are they contained in Rudiments or Jam Tracks files? I tested with brush kits from  Big Band, Custom Shop & Jazz.

    Thanks, Rob.

Thanks Jord, I’ll have to add Roots to my MIDI collection.   For some reason, these don’t show up when I have “Show Web Shop MIDI” enacted.

It has been my experience with brush type grooves and sounds in both toontracks EZX and SDX that they are very limited. The sounds themselves seem very subdued and feel that not a lot of attention was paid to this type of work. The grooves that use brushes also do not seem particularly innovative for the most part. Believe there actually should be some groove packs totally dedicated to brush work but currently there is not. The closest one IMO is the Roots SDX. For me brush samples and usage in grooves currently available is a weak point in the Toontrack ecosystem. Now if you want heavy metal samples and grooves, the world is your oyster in their packages.

Actually, the Jazz Sessions SDX is the most comprehensive when it comes to brush articulations. Roots is great, but it was done around SD2. Things have changed since then.

As far as brush articulations and grooves in other expansions, they would be dictated by their genre.
