Drag and Drop Solution found in Cubase 5

Since updating to Windows 7 64 bit I have been struggling with the drag and drop abilities of EZ Drummer in Cubase 5… This has not been a problem with other products and puzzled me!

I had hoped the 64 bit beta version was the solution but it was not…

All of the Midi settings in Cubase were correct (the other program I won’t mention here worked fine) but still no abilities… then I remembered for some reason folder properties after installing certain programs in Windows 7 were setting them to read only? Not sure if it’s a Windows 7 issue or not… Maybe it’s the installer or whatever… I’m only half geek.

Anyway after thinking on it I immediately checked the folder containing the midi files for EZ Drummer C:/Program Files(x86) Toontrack/EZDrummer/Midi) and sure enough they were set to “read only”…

I simply right clicked on the folder (right click and select properties) and unchecked the read only button… hit apply and answered yes to the prompt to make the entire folder subfolder directories section writable (unchecked). Allow Windows a few moments to reset the permissions.

I reopened Cubase 5 and EZDrummer and the problem was solved!

Got rid of the cut and pasted file and followed your directions. I’m slowly learning. 🙂 Tried to uncheck the read only on the midi folder as suggested in the link, but to no avail. The box wasn’t checked. The box was blue initially, which I thought meant it was checked, but after going through the process several times I realized it was never checked in the first place. You have 3 options – blue, empty, or checked. I still can’t drag and drop. Is there a setting in cubase I might be missing? I never had any problem on my desktop with the 32bit version.

possibly but I’m not sure why that would be the case, at least if you were talking about drag and drop from EZdrummer into Cubase which is how I read your post.

I will check with the programmer however, in case there is indeed a bug of some sort, although I’m doubtful.

The midi files are stored in the Program Files folder… Which would mean when the Program is running as a VST Instrument in Cubase it is reading the files from the directory… It was a hunch and the only fix I found for the problem…  it has been a few months since I was able to use the midi files drag and drop feature..  Once I changed the permission for the folder it worked.

This again was my fix running Windows 7 64 bit and Cubase 5 64 bit.  It was not an issue when I was in 32bit.

I spent a few hours trying to find a solution and it was only after what I posted here that it worked?

Strange thing is SD2 does not have this problem ?
I can drag the file from SD2 that EZD will not allow,
which I thought worth reporting.

Thought this might be a better ending…note

Drag and drop was not possible, solved by changing setting in desktop cubase icon/proprties/shortcut tab/advanced to run as administrator.
