I’ve wondered about his for a while. I just now played the Legacy of Rock SDX – Jet Black Plate Preset located here to demo the Dark Rock Midi on sale: https://www.toontrack.com/product/dark-rock-midi/
The kit sounds great. Very punchy. The cymbals and ride are particularly present and crisp. I load up the same preset in the same SDX, use a puncy rock midi pack I have from TT, and it sounds nothing like the Demo through the same speakers/sound card. The only variable is the MIDI; I don’t have the Dark Side Midi, but I’ve got a bunch of TT Rock/Classic Rock/Arena Rock midi, so I figure the dynamics are at least close to the Demo Midi. This my experience routinely with TT website Demos playing through presets in SDX’s I own. The presets sound very different.
Are the TT “presets” from the expansion packs tweaked for Demo purposes, so they’re not actually presets in our SDX’s? Anyone else experience this?
So: why do my SDX presets sound substantially different (not as good) as the same TT presets they use to Demo Midi packs?
SD3 3.4, EZK2.1.3, EZ Bass 1.3.1, Win11, i9/9900, all SSDs, 64g RAM, Cakewalk, Studio One
I tested a web shop version of the Dark Rock MIDI against the Jet Black Plate preset and compared. They sounded relatively the same at equal volume.
You might want to tweak your MIDI as Mat Hector is a rather hard hitter if that’s what you are going for out of that preset.
