Hi,
the Grid-Editor of Superior Drummer 3 lags while using it inside of Reaper. I’m trying to use Superior Drummer 3 with multiple stereo sends out to channels to edit them inside of the DAW and bounce them when they are ready.
While editing i noticed the grid editor jumps and doesn’t respond to mouse-inputs properly. This blocks working with the editor. I’ve looked into the performance-view to see if my CPU/RAM is fully charged but i can’t see any problems. I’ve got a CPU-Load of less then 2 % in my whole mix and have 12 GB of RAM left. The Kit- and Mixer-Views are working fine and smooth but the Grid-Editor lags incredibly. Even if i’m playing the grooves internally it does lag.
Standalone-Mode works fine as long as i don’t use the same project. A new project including only SD3 with exact the same settings and sends is fine too.
It seems to be something including the project-settings and loaded kit as well as the meter/daw-sync. I’ve selected “Follow Host” and set it to 6/8th like the project itself. After this setting it starts lagging.
I’ve even tried to freeze all other tracks (render and put FX-Offline to free resources) but it did not work.
How can i improve the performance of the plugin? Did anyone else observe such behaviour?
Best regards,
Ian
Hi,
I have been trying to reproduce but I haven’t been able to so far.
I am using a Macbook Pro on OS 10.13.6 with Reaper 5.974 (Apr 6). I am using the VST version of the SD3 plugin.
I don’t have a session full of other stuff, though.
These are my Reaper Preferences

Thanked by: Jan FeldI have almost the same settings and about 15 Tracks (Audio-Only, no FX anymore) to see if i can use it again. Actually i’ve added a new track including SD3 with all sends to single channels and now it works. It seems like there has been some issues in the instance-settings or something track-related i didn’t notice. By no i can use it without lags for about half an hour. I’m not sure what has happened or what did change, because i tried that before on the same track to keep the sends and routings.
After adding completely new tracks and route them how i need/like it, it seems to be fine. Maybe i just had some tweaks which had not been as good as i thought that i do not remember.
Nevertheless thanks for your attempt to help and reproduce it! I’ll keep checking the settings and try to find out more if i can see this behaviour again in the future.
Best regards,
Ian
What I found in another post works for me in reaper. Engage the record button (and possibly the monitor button) this takes away the lag for me.

Thanked by: jamster333So and again.. It appeared over time but is not reproducable definitely. It seems like the project itself has been blown up to more than 10000 bars inside SD3. Default its about a few hundred. I’ve noticed some serious issues with the MIDI-Song-Editor which holds the MIDI-Blocks. The scrollbar with the preview inside has shrunk and is therefore not usable anymore. You can’t navigate through your song. Maybe SD3 has problems with too large projects including a few thousand bars. I didn’t do anything special. Is it possible that reaper sends invalid project-length-data to SD3 so it assumes the project as very big and therefore is not able to display that many bars properly? Maybe it lags while updating the view and it’s just too much data.
Record Arm does not change anything for me.
Update: Actually it is the track length setting inside Superior Drummer 3.
Somehow the value of the track-length is set to more than 3500000 which shouldn’t even be possible. If you want to set it manually the maximum seems to be 10000. When i change back to a normal track-length everything seems to be okay again. I think there is a bug which sets the track length wrong.
Thanks for your help!
Best regards,
Ian

Thanked by: blazphemuz, juho karenko and Mika MiettinenWhen this happens to me, I just copy midi track a to new track and delete original.
This fix seems to work a while and then midi track kind of get corrupted again.
Have you tried setting the Track length inside SD3 in the ‘Track-Menu’ on the left side above the Song-View? There is an option to set the Track-Length which seems to be set to random values above some millions which can break performance. After i’ve manually reset this value to my Track length it fixes the issues. But still it’s a bug inside either SD3 or Reaper telling stuff to SD3..
Cheers,
Ian
OK, so in short; resetting the SD3 Track length to the Default 200 Bars “fixes” it?

Hi John,
sorry for the very late response but yes, at that time resetting the bars to 200 or at least a lower value fixed the problem!
Now after some trouble with my computer(s) and switching to a brand new Macbook Pro 15 (2019) Model i’m observing new lagging behaviour. It looks like it’s fine in standalone mode but the whole Superior Drummer interface and the DAW interface starts lagging (grid editor, drums, mixer, DAW-Meters….) when used in a DAW (Reaper, Ableton Live 10). It looks like it doesn’t change when using either AU or VST. This does only happen as long as the Superior Drummer Window is open. Audio isn’t affected in any way from this behaviour. It’s just the whole interface. So when programming MIDI oder Editing something in the SD-Mixer isn’t very nice to do.. I’m not sure, if someone else can reproduce this behaviour. I’m currently running macOS Mojave 10.14.6.
Are there some known issues or any settings/fixes i’ve not seen yet?
Best regards,
Smokehead
I have been getting a lot of lag when I FLOAT the Grid editor to another screen and use the mixer or drum view for viewing & editing also…anyone else getting this issue?
Thx, Jeff
Hi Smokehead,
I am using a 2019 MBP as well, on OS 10.14.6 and do not see that behaviour in Pro Tools, Logic nor Reaper.
In Live, I can see what you mean when the transport is running. It’s like some tenths of delay between moving knobs and faders and it actually happening.
Seems more like a Live issue or setting since I can’t provoke that behaviour in any other host on my MBP?
@onewayout_1: is this in the standalone or in a DAW?

John

Hi John , i’ve actually observed the issue is just related to multi-monitor setups (i’m using a FullHD 1920×1080 monitor in addition to the macbook). When i’m moving the window to the second monitor everything looks good so far. Not as good as when i’m only using the macbook without monitor but still better than the superior-window on the macbooks display when a second monitor is plugged in.
Maybe there’s some issue while rendering when using multiple monitors. But at least it looks like i can work with it by now.
Thanks for your help.

Hi, it’s me again.
After working for some time using multiple monitors i’ve been forced to use the Macbooks display without aditional monitors. Then i’ve noticed that it’s still lagging massiveley as well in Ableton Live and Reaper. It seems like it’s not working that well with some scaling/rendering issues. It is slightly better when using the smallest scale and window size but it’s still lagging when editing MIDI in the Grid Editor or when ‘watching’ the drums playing. The worst thing i can do is selecting an instrument with the cursor. Then it’s about half a second until it’s highlighted (blue). Sound is almost there immediately. It doesn’t get better when using high buffer sizes and low sample rates which results in very bad latencies.
I’m still using macOS Mojave. I don’t want to update to Catalina yet.
Still hoping for news..
Best regards,
Smokehead

Maybe a long shot, but take a look at this post: https://www.toontrack.com/forums/topic/slow-graphical-response/?view=all#post-2491773
Using the wrong color settings for the screens on Macs can make them lag in certain situations.
