Dry drums don’t hide behind ambience – they breathe and speak with raw, unfiltered intimacy, like they’re right at the edge of your ear. If you’re looking for muffled, punchy and absolutely dead – yet unmistakably alive – drum sounds, this EZX for EZdrummer 3 and Superior Drummer 3 delivers exactly that.
Featuring four carefully curated kits, the Dry EZX spans a wide sonic range – from earthy and warm to snappy and slightly pingy. Recorded in a small, low-ceilinged room with thick drapes lining the walls, ambience was stripped down to an absolute minimum. The result is a collection of viscerally tight kits that sound as if you’re right there in the room – inches from the drums.
One standout feature is that for selected kits, two drummers were seated opposite each other, striking their own kick, snare, toms and hi-hats simultaneously across every velocity layer. The natural flams and organic imperfections this resulted in add a rich, layered sound – perfect for punching up your grooves with subtle but extra variation.
In addition to the drums, a collection of mix-ready presets for each kit as well as a library of basic, backbeat-centric grooves are provided, allowing you to hit the ground running on the way to your next song.
If you’re looking for an EZX that is just as ideal for subtle singer-songwriter and indie as it is for edgy beats and modern pop, this is it. Gear up for some close, focused and absolutely dry drum magic.
This EZX expansion requires EZdrummer 3 or Superior Drummer 3.
Four kits, handpicked for the best-possible tonal width.

Dual drummers, one voice!
Drummers playing in tandem have been a recurring idea in music history – from jazz and funk to ’60s rock and hip-hop. For selected instruments in this EZX, we placed two drummers opposite each other, striking their respective kick, snare, toms and hi-hats simultaneously across every velocity layer. The resulting natural flams and organic imperfections created a rich, layered sound that’s perfect for adding texture and movement to your beats. Use these articulations to punch up your grooves with subtle but extra variation!
You’ve played in several bands across very different genres – from laid-back pop to thunderous post-metal. What is it about dry drum sounds that speaks to you?
I like the level of control you have when playing a dry kit – the ability to really work with dynamics and detailed grooves. It translates well across genres and feels just as relevant in retro contexts as in more modern music. The dry sound leaves more room for nuance and creativity, both in how you play and how the drums sit in a track.
“The dry sound leaves more room for nuance and creativity, both in how you play and how the drums sit in a track.”
Is playing a small and tight kit in a damped room different compared to a reverberant space? Does it automatically trigger different ideas and feels?
Absolutely. You naturally tend to play softer and pay closer attention to dynamics, touch and articulation. It can also influence timing in subtle ways, which in turn leads to different grooves and musical ideas. The environment really shapes how you interact with the kit.
If you had to sum it up: what makes this expansion special?
I feel this expansion offers something that hasn’t really been done before. It has a very clear aesthetic identity, while still giving the user a lot of creative freedom. You can be quite focused or very exploratory with it and I’m confident it will be both useful and inspiring for a wide range of users.
You started out as a drummer (and still very much are one!). When did you discover that you also loved recording?
It actually started really early. When I was about seven years old I got to borrow my dad’s old Tandberg reel-to-reel tape machine. I could barely play anything back then, but just the idea of being able to record my voice or make sounds was mind-blowing. Listening back at different tape speeds felt almost magical – that curiosity really stuck with me. Later on, around 14–15, when we started forming bands, we got our hands on a Fostex 8-track and a small mixer. We ran the tape machine through the inserts and suddenly had faders to work with – it felt like endless possibilities. Bouncing tracks, ping-ponging channels… it was messy, but incredibly fun. That’s probably when recording became just as exciting as playing.
If you had to choose – would you rather record/produce a project or be the one playing drums on it? Why?
Honestly, I love both. In recent years I’ve probably spent more time recording and producing than actually playing, but the most fun is when those two worlds meet. Being able to think like a drummer while shaping the bigger picture of a production – that’s where I feel most at home.
Being a drummer yourself, what was it like building a drum-focused product with two other drummers?
I’ve known Thomas and Micke since we were teenagers and I really love them – both as drummers and as people. So when the opportunity came up, it was a total no-brainer. We already share the same mindset around feel, sound and what actually inspires you to play, so it felt very natural from the start.
“A naturally dry drum sample pack that’s still really versatile.”
If you had to sum it up: what makes this expansion special?
I feel like something like this has been missing in the market. A naturally dry drum sample pack that’s still really versatile. You can use it for modern hip-hop and R&B, singer-songwriter stuff or bigger, heavier productions. It’s nice to have something raw and unpolished – something honest – that you can shape afterwards to fit whatever you’re working on in the studio.
