| ADD TO CARTThe Dream Pop EZX presents a truly unique fusion of organic and electronic percussion that bridges the gap between nature and technology. A sonic panorama where wood meets metal, man battles machine and complex textures of modular synthesis clash with the crude, unfiltered tone of nature. This is the perfect canvas for ethereal soundscapes and contemporary music where you let your own creativity be the primary architect.
All in all, the Dream Pop EZX comes with 29 preset drum kits made up by a total of close to 250 individual percussive sounds. In addition to traditional acoustic drums and classic drum machine sounds, you’ll find completely new hybrids and textured percussive foley sampled from a rich variety of elements. Get creative renditions of stomps, claps, snares and kicks – but also, a set of chromatic pad-like sounds as well as a collection of ever-changing filter loops run through a modular system.
The Dream Pop EZX is the culmination of when cutting-edge sound design comes to a head with convention and creates something entirely new. Start making the drum tracks of your wildest dreams. Literally.
The Dream Pop EZX combines acoustic drums and classic machines with creative percussion elements, all honed and shaped with cutting-edge sound design to never-before-heard drum kit hybrids, tailored for modern music-making.
Real drums, multi-sampled in classic Toontrack fashion – mixed, matched and layered to contemporary hybrids.
Classic drum machine sounds and all-new percussive tones built from the ground up in a modular system.
An extensive set of percussive and sound effect-like sounds recorded from various natural elements – wood, water, gravel, branches, claps and stomps, to name a few.
With the chromatic soundscapes of ambient, ethereal synth-like pads, the Dream Pop EZX goes beyond the traditional definition of drums and percussion – this is a multi-instrument.
Albino
An analog, white noise-ish feel mixed with some acoustic percussion. Suitable for a wide range of styles.
Anchorwood
Just like the name, the feel we went for is chains and iron mixed with wood. An organic sound all the way through.
Bitcrush
For this one, we leaned slightly towards old-school hip-hop and created a tight, bit-crushed kit.
Blige
In this preset, we went for sounds with a short and dry decay. Perfect for early 2000s R&B.
Body
The break beat-feel. Tight, still loud and slightly ambient. Lots of wood-feel in this one.
Deep
Deep, analogue tones mixed with warm acoustic toms and percussion elements. Great for any modern context, especially hip-hop.
Dirt
Crunchy, dirty and grainy sounds – perfect for any modern pop or EDM track.
Dream-hop
We created this preset with a dreamy and ambient hip-hop sound in mind. Sonically, it turned out real warm, atmospheric and deep.
Garage
Semi-acoustic kit with a dirty and loud garage-feel. Perfect for any hip-hop or dance drack.
Garage 2
Same here – but even dirtier.
Gretsch* Mute
For this one, we sampled Mattias Eklund’s private Gretsch* kit. We dampened parts of it with duck tape and cloth and mixed it all up with percussion that had a woody feel to it.
Gretsch* Open
The same kit, but without dampening.
Gretsch* Regular
The same kit, but with less dampening. Sort of a midway between the ‘Mute’ and ‘Open’ presets.
Happy
Tight and snappy. Great old-school hip-hop feel.
Hard
Big, hard machine-like sounds with an obvious wink to the ‘80s.
Hybrid
In this preset, we combined several percussive elements recorded outdoors with regular drum tones. Combined, it all came out pretty sophisticated and slick.
Jessie
Big, dominant sounds that eat up a lot of sonic space. Perfect for a track where you want the drums to get the spotlight.
Keys
For this one, we wanted to create a sound tailored for ambient pop ballads.
Rim
The focal point of this preset is the rimshot snare. It’s the perfect choice for up-tempo hip-hip or any kind of dance track.
Sauna
The main character of this preset is wood. We actually sampled the percussive sounds in different parts of a sauna. To mix it up, we used natural drum tones.
Scrapyard
An experimental mix-up of different kit pieces. Acoustic, modular and several percussive pieces sampled from various elements in nature – all blended to a truly unique kit.
Softmoss
A kindred spirit to Scrapyard. This one has a tone that’s a lot more soft and dampened, though.
Softpants
For this one, we spiced up the Softmoss preset by adding in several layers of more bright instruments.
Stomp
Most of this preset is made up from sounds we recorded outdoors. To get a massive and organic sound, we layered several combinations of stomps on the kick and snare.
The Morg
An acoustic kit with a really laid-back and soft tone.
Twig
With this kit, we wanted to capture a natural but still otherworldly feel. We sampled twigs, branches and gravel.
White
Mostly digital and modular sounds with a sweet white noise-snare. Suits any style, but goes exceptionally well with any hip-hop beat.
Yezus
For this one, we went for an 808-ish tone, very deep – perfect for any modern R&B or classy hip-hop track.
Helmed by the creative duo of Addeboy vs. Cliff, the Dream Pop EZX was produced in collaboration with Toontrack’s head of Sound Design, Mattias Eklund, at his private studio in the archipelago of northern Sweden. With an array of analog modular systems, percussion and drums, they set out to create what would become probably one of the most unique collections of percussive sound libraries in the history of Toontrack.
“To design this library from the ground up, without any rules or restraints, has been one of the most creative processess I’ve ever been part of. Creating each preset has literally been like writing a song, from start to finish. To me, this product is just as much about music as it is about drums,”
said Mattias Eklund.
Addeboy vs. Cliff has collectively won several awards, produced, written and recorded with acts like Say Lou Lou, Adam Tensta and Roxette. Mattias is the founder of Toontrack and has a long history of audio engineering, mixing and sound design.
This project evolved over the course of almost a year. Looking back on the entire journey from start to finish, what’s the most fun part you take away from this experience?
Andreas: For me, I think the most fun part was when we sampled all the exterior sounds. We were all in the same creative state of mind and just took off from there totally committed to the task at hand.
Hannes: Overall it was a great experience. Such fun project to do! The most fun I had was the days we were outside recording all sorts of percussion and sounds from nature. Twigs, grass, wood and stones. Very inspiring. And Mattias cooking was delicious!
Mattias: I had a great deal of fun in making sound design for this. I think that our foley recordings turned out really cool, they have a lot of natural ambience which I love. But also, I have to say that playing with my modular system and creating sounds with that is something that I truly love and could do that all day long. We also did a lot of layering sounds, that was really fun too, because the guys knew exactly what they were looking for. All of it was fun really, lets do one more
How did you tackle each preset – did you have a preconceived plan for each or did you let your creativity run free?
Andreas: It was a combination of both. Some presets were inspired by already existing tracks that we liked – going for the same vibe but adding some new stuff to it as well. We also had some creative adventures with the exterior sounds and FX stuff that resulted in some presets that really stood out.
Hannes: I would say 50/50. Maybe half of the sounds we knew beforehand that we wanted to create. Those we built by mixing sounds from Toontrack’s vaults with all-new sounds as well as our own favorite samples that we have collected over the years. We also recorded some drums that we really wanted to have. The other half was made from playing with machines and recording things and blending them together to something we liked. Compiling the presets was fast and easy once we had all the sounds.
Mattias: They were pretty straight forward. From the start, we created kick and snare combinations that had sort of a meaning or a thought to it. And then we just added the elements that fitted with those that we also created with the same sort of mindset. From there, we continued and made sort of an overall idea for sends and auxes which I think worked out really well (such as “The Dream” fader and FX knobs). Also, of course, each preset got their own individual FX processing depending on the kit. So, remember that when you select a full preset, and change a kick drum for example, it will not sound the same as that kick drum in another preset. When I make presets, create sound design, or make songs, I always improvise a lot, so that is always a big part for me. For example, when it comes to the chromatic sounds, they are very different in every preset. A lot of improvisation with FX and envelopes etc is going on.
If you had to pick one favorite out of the 29 presets, which one would it be and why?
Andreas: Oh, tough one. They are so different form each other. But I guess the “Jessie” preset because I made a track with it right away.
Hannes: “Dream-Hop”. Love how easy it is to create a vibe with it. Also the snare from “The Morg” is a favorite!
Mattias: That is a hard question. I can’t really point out one preset, there are so many – and really, I am not even looking at the presets as such, but the whole product. I am very proud of what we achieved sonically. I think this product is exactly what I was looking for to make together with Addeboy vs. Cliff.
What do you hope songwriters and producers will get out of this massive set of sounds and how do you see yourself using them in your own creative process?
Andreas: I hope this product can challenge songwriters and producers to innovate their styles. To be daring and explore new ground in their music. They have a great tool with this one. The Dream Pop EZX will definitely be my starting point in any production since it covers a lot of sounds and has a nice twist to it. It has a lot of character and vibe.
Hannes: Hope they will get inspired and feel they can produce drums exclusively from these sounds. I already use it a lot. All my favorite sounds are finally collected in one place!
Mattias: I am pretty sure that a lot of people will fall in love with the Dream Pop EZX. It just gives you creativity all the way through with amazing sounds, and a LOT of them. I believe that’s what it’s all about, to create when you feel creative, not having to search for days for the right sound to get the feeling you need to create that song or beat. I think people will appreciate the sonic qualities and the vast variety of sounds.
