Hey Brad, I have everything you mentioned and set like you suggested and still nothing. I can use the mouse to click a drum and get sound like normal but the pad just won’t trigger it. I’m gonna try and contact Akai again and ask them for suggestions. Maybe Toontrack will respond with a step by step way to to this. I really wish there was better literature on how things in SD3 work for set up. Thanks again for your help

So I wanted to clarify something. In my first post I posted that I had a signal going into Protools. That signal is not getting to SD3 at all. If you Google anything related to this I have done all of them and nothing has worked at all to fix this. I have been dealing with this since I had owned the Akai about 2 years now. (I have been using a mouse to program all my drum tracks) I do not know anyone who has Protools and this Akai and SD3 so I had to turn to this forum to try to get to the bottom of this after paying for support at AVID and speaking to Akai support over and over who insist it is Toontrack related not PT or them. ******** Can someone please tell me what the input and out put on the instrument track MIDI is supposed to be set to? I have midi in as Akai but the out is All Channels. I insert SD3 into Insert box on channel. I/O. – IN is set to NO INPUT. and out goes to Mon 1- 2. NOW, If I open up SD3 and use my mouse to hit a drum it works fine but the Akai there is no response at all. I have PT Preferences (and yes I have cleared them out to refresh them)set to “first selected midi track” . I have the Akai set up and recognized in Setup/MIDI/MIDI Input Devices. Yes it is checked. Yes the Instrument track can see it. NO it does nothing in SD3 only. If I load anything else, the Akai works easily and perfectly. SD3 does not do anything. Think of it this way, you have a home wall light switch…if you switch it on (the pad) nothing happens but if you go to the other switch across the room (stand alone version) it works 100% fine. Even though they both control the same light (SD3)

Bear Faced Cow: I am not sure where you are talking about? If you are asking am I getting a signal into SD3, then no, nothing. If I click and use my mouse I can see the drums actually glow representing the strike and hear the sound. Using the Akai pads show nothing at all and again ONLY within Protools but any other virtual instrument works perfectly with it. So I think there has to be a setting somewhere within SD3 that isn’t either turned on or incorrectly set to allow it to see the AKAI is triggering the strikes. A funny thing is SD3 is supposed to be on an instrument track in PT but I have never been able to get it working that way (in EZ Drummer 2) I have SD3 now so I haven’t tried it and have multi-outs yet. I have always used an audio track (but not with the Akai) Thanks!

Hi John and thanks for responding. Yes, any other VI I put into the track works perfectly fine with my AKAI so I know it works. I enable the recording button (as per AVID) and only SD3 does not work (EX Drummer2 either ) I have both. Yes All Midi is enabled and so is Recording button. I can see a signal in the midi signal meter at the top of the track channel. I am not sure what the Output (for midi) is supposed to be set to. I have tried every single channel on each of the choices when it opens. (channels 1 through 16 on each) Nothing triggers anything within SD3 that I have found yet. Thus why I came here looking for help.

Is there a way to change the name to something custom? I can’t imagine that Sd3 left that feature out when EZ Drummer has it.

John,
Is there any in depth manuals or videos about the routing options to use?

After a bunch of trial and error I was able to get all of my tracks routed to Protools. It’s a basic routing but it gets me going and from here I’ll work with buses and fx.
Thanks John you got me moving in the right direction.

Thank you for the replies. I understand now. I decided to invest in SD3 so I might as well get the things that bring out it’s power!

I use Protools and when setting up channels I can choose either mono or stereo tracks. Multi out can be set up with either. I use all mono and split mono to have full control of every channel. You have a L and R choice for every track unless you want a stereo track. Either way if you are using Protools just duplicate the track to dual mono for mono and split any stereo track to mono.

Thanked by: Henrik EkblomI’ve not found an actual way to dampen them but you can use compression to simulate a dampened drum. Reduce release time to do the cymbals.

After doing a complete reload of EZ Drummer and Protools it is working now but only in PT10 not PT12. It seems that it is maxing out my CPU when I add to track in PT12. I give up any ideas? It will freeze PT12 for a good 2-3 minutes and make it pretty much useless. If I try to hit a drum it does absolutely nothing. BTW I have a different back up drive now and it works fine in PT10 without any problems.
I use a 12GB Windows 10 64bit i5 processor completely tuned for audio production. I only have this problem with PT12 and not other DAW.

The version of PT 12 is as much as I could afford. I’m not a big fan or constantly paying for updates through a subscription contract if it is still the current versions ( PT 12, 12.2,12.5 etc) I paid up til 12.5.2 and I think it should update for free until they make the next redesign. When they redesign it and make it PT 13 +++ then I can see paying for the upgrade. I do not agree with a cloud type subscription for anything as you never truly own anything today that way and it ends up costing way more than it is worth to me. It’s not my fault they had bugs and needed to be fixed because I thought I was buying a well tested program. Things happen and right is right they should man up and fix it. Imagine if you leased a car and the engine went under warranty. Oh sorry we knew it wasn’t 100% I guess you’ll have to keep paying for us to fix it. It’s like leasing a car, stupid.
OK I completely updated all the EZ Drummer programs and expansions through my product manager to all of the latest versions on your site as of today. I only have a couple of expansions as well all now updated. I think more of the problem I am experiencing is the backup drive I am using to store PT files. It wasn’t fast enough so I am reformatting a new USB 3.0 drive explicitly for PT audio production.
I’ll figure it out.

I’ve actually have a similar issue. Not all of my files have the orange triangle but many do. I’ve run the install and updates 3x and still have them. I noticed that a lot of files that were there in EZD1 have diappeared in EZD2 in the EZX DFH expansion. I used to have tom grooves but I can’t find them anywhere. I wish there were better PDF or tutorials on setting up the software.
Are there tutorials on initial set up of the EZD2 software? How do I know all the files are actually installed? I’ve noticed a huge decrease in Browser files for each expansion packs I have compared to EZD1. It’s like they were streamlined for EZD2.
For instance. Under Browser> EZX Metal> Metal> Dirk Verbeuren….there is nothing under that at all. It is total blank until you get to the next one down Asphyxiation 78BPM which has a list of song parts.

I think I just got it. All the tracks in a track folder have to be highlighted before bouncing to track. I was just highlighting the midi track but I guess you have to tell it where to bounce to as well. Anyway this is how you do it fo others wondering how.
Hope it helps

OK here’s a final update. We installed everything as 64 bit so far. All is 100% working fine. We were able to now see it in the plug in list and opened it up in the DAW. We are going to see if all of my plug ins work in 64bit and if so there would be no reason to install the 32bit version of everything. So I guess there must have been multiple instances that can conflict with each other. One thing I noticed now is how fast my system is now running. I loaded it pretty quick (less than 30 seconds with a full vst scan) and plays multiple tacks without any bogging down which I experienced prior to reformatting the drive. So maybe i had something on there causing the isses but none the less it’s all up and running. Now onto installing all my Waves stuff…yee ha! Thank you for all the help and advice you offered!!!
One observation: Toontrack makes it’s own folder for everything (PDF,Stand alone, Clicks) except the dll file which installed to C:/ProgramFiles/VstPlugins. Before i did it it never put the dll file in Vst folder until i reformatted everything……..observation. Hope this helps.
