  • Hello Ilja,

I use Allen and Heath QU series (24, 32 or SB) mixer.

Macbook Pro direct on USB as audio interface output on mixer. (Signal pad stays digital, no digital to analoge to digital converting back and forward – no latency and audio quality loss)

This situation occured also to me with cracking and was solved with the latest Allen and Heath firmware for the mixers.

    kind greetings,

    Wouter

    Did you already tried:

    Out Channels

    Output(L) 1:1
    Output(R) 1:2
    Output(L) 2:3
    Output(R) 2:4
    Output(L) 3:5
    Output(R) 3:6
    Output(L) 4:7
    Output(R) 4:8
    Output(L) 5:9
    Output(R)5:10

In the mixer you can use buses in a configuration like the screenshot:
    Foto-06-07-2023-om-23.51
Output 1 = Left drum mix (See the bus sends to the buses …ST for stereo mixing)
Output 2 = Right drum mix (See the bus sends to the buses …ST for stereo mixing)
Output 3 = Kick (note the panning on the bus to left)
Output 4 = Snare (note the panning on the bus to right)
Output 5 = Toms (note the panning on the bus to left)
Output 6 = Hihat (note the panning on the bus to right)
Output 7 = OH Left (note the panning on the bus to left)
Output 8 = OH Right (note the panning on the bus to right)
Output 9 = Ambience Left (note the panning on the bus to left)
Output 10 = Ambience Right (note the panning on the bus to right)

    Greetings Wouter

Aggregate is not working for me because I need to stay in the numbering of channel 1 to 32 and aggregate is then numbering from channel 1 to 64.

Aggregate is also based on using multiple interfaces on the same time and make more inputs or outputs possible.

    Dear Jack and Jordan,

Thanks to your input/reaction it gave me the idea to try something with the macOS “Multi output device” setting and this works.

    Step 1
Now I have to select only the audio interface I want to use for the situation that I am (Audio interface at Home TD50-X, Practice location band QU-SB or QU-32 Live performance).
Selection from the menu to be made : TD-50X, QU-SB Audio or QU-32 Audio
    Foto-05-07-2023-om-23.13

    Step 2
Start SD3, choose the stored Project with the right mixer preset and Start Drumming!

    Settings in SD3
In the SD3   Audio/MIDI Setup… menu the settings are set to:
    Output Device “Audio Interfaces 32ch”
    Foto-05-07-2023-om-23.11
Out Channels for the last time 32 channel reconfiguring
    Foto-05-07-2023-om-23.12

With this solution the 32 channel configuration is not resetted anymore, when I change to another connected audio interface.
No more manually readdressing 32 channels anymore 🙂

    Thank you Jord,

I think that I am special drummer with these setups 😉

In the studio it is a mostly fixed setup instead of my dynamic setups.

    Kind greetings Wouter

Thank you Jack for your response!
It is good to talk about it to make it more clear and maybe somebody knows a better way or work around.

The renumbering is here in SD3 Out Channels -> Selection “Use multi-out”>, so this is not an macOS audio management menu:

    Foto-04-07-2023-om-23.08

Channel 1 to 32 I have to do it manually for all the 32 outputs, sitting behind my drum kit without the computer straight in front of me.
So this is not so comfortable action to do in preparation setup 😉

    Kind greetings Wouter

Thank you all for your input and suggestions.

I looked to what is mentioned and it is not an Audio management or macOS thing, these are working good and are set in the right way.
Only one interface is connected, for the output of the sound.
The further specific mixer/audio interface settings I made with the “User Presets” function.
This is used for the correct routing for the interface I use at that time (see example picture when the audio goes to the Roland TD-50X).

    PHOTO-2022-11-23-11-43-22

To make clear I don’t want to call it an SD3 issue, but maybe an improvement/new option suggestion 😉
Standard way of coming up of the SD3   Audio/MIDI Setup… -> Out Channels -> Selection “Use multi-out”> is by default:
    Output(L) 1:1
    Output(R) 1:2
    Output(L) 2:1
    Output(R) 2:2
    Output(L) 3:1
    Output(R) 3:2

It should be nice if you can “toggle” this from the default output numbering 1 and 2, to 1,2,3

    Output(L) 1: 1
    Output(R) 1:2
    Output(L) 2:3
    Output(R) 2:4
    Output(L) 3:5
    Output(R) 3:6
    Output(L) 4:7
    Output(R) 4:8

With this last output numbering setup I can control everything with the made “User Presets” function.

    Hi Jack,

Thank you for your quick response!

The Roland VAD706 is using the TD-50X drum brain to the Macbook Pro with SD3, this is the “midi” connection for what I play.

SD3 is running standalone with it’s mixer settings to outputs configured for the audio output to TD50X back, A&H QU-SB or A&H QU32, no daw is used.

For the digital mixers of Allen & Heath it is possible to use them as audio interface with a USB connection. The audio becomes available as drum channels from my computer.
The audio signals from SD3 are then digital without analog sound loss available and pre mixed for the sound engineer.

It is not an real issue but every time I connect my MacBook to one of the three audio interfaces I have to setup manually all 32 output channels, because on default it is set to:

    Out Channels

    Output(L) 1: 1
    Output(R) 1:2
    Output(L) 2:1
    Output(R) 2:2
    Output(L) 3:1
    Output(R) 3:2

I change this to all available outputs of the interface:

    Out Channels

    Output(L) 1: 1
    Output(R) 1:2
    Output(L) 2:3
    Output(R) 2:4
    Output(L) 3:5
    Output(R) 3:6
    Output(L) 4:7
    Output(R) 4:8
