I calibrated my Roland VH-14D hats within SD3 so that they really feel and work perfectly with the samples and articulations. I don’t know which module you’re using, but with the TD-27 it’s not supposed to use all 3 zones of the VH-14D, but there is a workaround, perhaps you’ll find this video useful: https://youtu.be/LxJfkFH6npQ?si=n_H57m699AuW5Zun&t=182
About your issue with “built-in” room reverb (presumably you’re using the Core library), my experience is that it’s not at all audible when you mix your drums with other instruments. Btw, you might wanna check in other SDX (f.e. The Rooms of Hansa and Hitmaker), which feature some very dry-sounding presets.
I agree with you about the sound preview of individual elements. This should be way easier and user-friendly.
