I got it up and running, both the DFH and the update. I like it.
This is the first EZX I’ve purchased and I have to say I was a bit surprised that you can’t mix the individual drums from the different kits (I never noticed it with the stock and cocktail kits because I don’t use the cocktail kit).
I’m sure the DFH has everything I need but why can’t the kits be inter-mixed?

Thanks Scott. I realized that earlier . The full product is still downloading – it’s huge! I can’t wait. I’ve been wanting this for a long time.

Never mind – I got it.
I hadn’t added the FULL path to the 64 bit DLL (C:Program FilesVstPluginsToontrack64bit). I had added a higher level path only (C:Program FilesVstPlugins), assuming the path would include child folders.
It would be nice to have the option to include child folders when setting the paths, or to point this out somewhere (if it’s in the docs I didn’t see it).

Hi Dave,
I tried the EZD project only, and installed a SIIG / TI FireWire card, and things seem to be okay. But I think the biggest difference was going into the Sonar > Options > Global > MIDI Tab and setting the Playback buffer up to 500 mSec. That’s evidently the size of buffer used to look ahead and process MIDI by sending it to the instrument module.
When I went back to my original project that I was having problems with it ends up having higher latency for monitoring a guitar track live BUT EZD played flawlessly! The Sonar > Options > Audio > General Tabl says I’m now running at 392 samples / 8.9 mSec. I think in reality it ends up being a bit more because I hear a delay between my picking and when the notes are rendered, I’d guess 15 – 20 mS.
But I can’t complain, this project has 24 tracks and 5 busses with 3 GR 4 (running in HI FI mode), 22 other VST’s including 3 Lexicon Pantheon reverbs, 1 Cakewalk PerfectSpace convolution reverb, Jeroen Breebaart limiter, and of course, EZdrummer itself. I think that even though the CPU monitors still only show about 50% it may actually have been buffer sizes (aside from the ASIO buffer) that may have been the culprit. I don’t know for sure, but it’s working better now.
I sure do thank you for your interest and help.

Hi John and Dave –
I didn’t see your replies when I made my last entry.
John – I do have the latest PreSonus driver, the Win 7 / 64 bit driver. I actually went from Vista to Win 7 because they came out with the driver. Their previous driver didn’t work on my box with Win 7. As for the ASIO settings, I’ve tried setting it at most combinations available through their Universal Control – Normal to Safe Mode 3 and various buffer sizes. As I mentioned before it was when I lowered the buffer size that the EZD started playing better (but I can’t monitor or record at those lower buffer sizes without dropout).
Dave – I’ll try what you suggest, a new project with only EZD. I wasn’t aware Guitar Rig had problems. It’s seemed pretty stable to me (except I can’t get the 64 bit stand-alone host to work). If it makes a difference, I don’t use the foot pedal, just the software. I have read on their forum (or somewhere) that some people do have problems with GR, I just haven’t.
In fact, when I first got this PC it had Vista. I had no problems with EZD, latency in Sonar, and could run 4-5 GR instances, 3-4 Lexicon Pantheon reverbs, plus other plugins, perhaps 20 or so total, without any issue. I went to Win 7 when PreSonus came out with their new driver. According to what I’ve read, Win 7 seems like it should be better (based on some info on a Cakewalk page). But frankly it seems like I’ve had problems since. I’d like to get it to run on Win 7, and will try the TI chipset FireWire card, but if that doesn’t work I’ll just go back to Vista.
Thanks to both of you!
Randy

Well I partly solved my problem described above…
I downloaded the MS hotfix for the 1394 driver (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/981613) per a suggestion on the PreSonus forum. I think that helped some with the latency, which helped with EZD.
I found that if I have latency too high various notes on EZD will drop off. Just by lowering the latency EZD would consistently play all notes without dropout. I saw a YouTube today that also led me in that direction.
Now I don’t think there’s any issue w/ EZD on my system other than I have to figure out my latency issue. I’m not sure the hotfix did much. My PC uses an LSI chipset for the FireWire. I guess I’ll go get a card with a TI chipset next.

Hi Dave,
Thanks for replying and asking quetions – you always seem to be helpful!
To answer your question, yes, basically.
I created a new project last night with only EZD and one track with Guitar Rig enabled but nothing recorded. I was trying to just start a new tune and selecting some EZD tracks. Due to general latency issues that I’m also battling I re-booted and then re-opened the project and had the drop out issue. That’s when I tried BFD and got it to play (on the re-boot, re-open).
I do have a number of other plugins inserted but I had disabled all of them except the one Guitar Rig (their 64 bit beta version) and the two drum plugins (these were not both on at the same time).
I’ve had this problem on a few songs now and I’ve tried to pinpoint when it started. I also have a latency problem that I can’t seem to solve but I don’t know if it’s related. I don’t think so because I’m not doing any other MIDI stuff and even what MIDI I do use doesn’t go through the PreSonus (I use Yamaha’s USB MIDI driver and a USB MIDI connection to one Yamaha MO 6).

I have this same problem. I thought it might be because I was hitting play before the drums were re-sampled (I am using 48kHz / 24 Bit sampling for the Sonar project), but even if I wait until EZD’s memory indicator stops (stock drum kit, about 308M), I still have the issue.
I’m using the 64 bit EZD. I’ve tried different buffer sizes from 64 to 2048.
As the OP stated, I’ve created new projects and they work fine including exporting a mix. I’ve then shut down my PC, gone back to it the next day and get the intermittent drum hits. I can open the MIDI file and verify the notes are still there. If I loop just a measure which was skipping, the notes may or may not play each pass through. It seems like the drop out is random too – if I start the song in a different location it may drop different notes. But, it doesn’t seem like there’s any pattern (e.g., it’s not always the third measure).
I tried using BFD with the same MIDI file and don’t have the same issue (I don’t know if the stock BDF with Sonar 8.5 Producer is 64 bit).

Hi Scott,
I am using a 64 bit version of Sonar. I don’t use any additional bridging utility (Sonar is supposed to have that built in).
It sounded like other users are not having this problem, based on the earlier posts.
If I can be a beta tester for the 64 bit version, especially if it may address my issue, please let me know. I’ve been using drum clips for some time and have grown tired of them and really want to find a different solution to getting drum tracks. But without the ability to sync to Sonar, EZ Drummer just doesn’t work for me.

Hey guys, this post got me started. Thanks a lot!
I just got EZ Drummer and can get the tracks dragged into Sonar 8.3.1 okay.
My problem is with the auditioning of grooves in EZ Drummer. Until I drag the midi file into sonar they don’t play sync’d up to the MIDI tempo, nor do they sync to the proper note (i.e., the EZ Drummer demo doesn’t start at beat one or use the same tempo like drum clips do in the loop explorer).
The MIDI light on the EZ Drummer console doesn’t come on either unless it’s playing a midi file that I’ve copied to sonar.
I am using the 64 bit Vista and Sonar. I’ve tried enabling / disabling the sonar midi sync buttons but it doesn’t seem to matter.
Can you help me sync EZ Drummer to Sonar?
Thanks in advance!
Randy
