I am thinking about SDX Death and Darkness. Have you had any experience with this one ?

Thanks for the feedback. I actually spent a couple of hours playing around and got a pretty close result. I had to change a lot of things including, routings, bleeds, ambience channels, EQ, compression etc. Having done it once I now have an SDX user setup that can bring in an SD3 snare with similar sound to original SDs snare sound and same for SD3 that can now bring in an SDX snare with similar sound to the original SDX snare. I was pleased to see your response and realise there was no “quick and easy solution”. I have achieved what I wanted and also learnt a lot more about the incredible flexibility of Superior Drummer 3 in the process.

I enjoy reading your various responses and clearly you have a lot of experience with SD3 and offer some very helpful advice to those of us who are less experienced.

    thanks again, Andrew

There is a 6.5 x 14″ Brady Jarrah Block” snare in the SDX “Progressive Foundry” Expansion pack but I haven’t tried to recreate that snare sound (but I have liked that sound since I first heard that first Spin Doctor’s album).

In that case try this. Load up a full kit first. Then:

1 – remove all instruments you don’t want so leave snare only

2 – to change to a different snare and preset, highlight the snare, then hold control down and go to mixer and choose all channels you want to load another preset (include microphone channels and any bus channels you want)

3 – select preset you want and click the  down arrow on the right and choose “select parts”

4 – highlight “only selected instruments” and “only selected channels” and untick “load macro controls” then press load parts.

this will then bring in only the new snare and only the presets from the channels you chose (eg snare top, snare bottom, room, oh and any other effect channels etc).

    Hope this helps.

Just load a kit and then select the snare and just replace this instrument to try different snare sounds. You can turn off all of the other drums/cymbals as well if you want (highlight then right click and “remove instrument”). cheers, Andrew

I did a “workaround” in the MIDI In/E-Drums settings and actually created a velocity “curve” with straight lines but with lots of points so it “smooths” it out – although not quite as good as smooth curve. This curve does then stay saved in my MIDI In/E-Drums setttings and pretty much gives me what I am after – I like soft and smooth ghost notes notes for low velocities and then a steep gradient to the higher velocity louder hits on my snare.

Can anyone from Toontrack condirm if this is the only way to achieve this or is there something else I am doing incorrectly. cheers, Andrew

Yeah I saved as a MIDI In/E-Drums preset and also saved as a project but it still does not keep the smooth curve and I have to reload the saved (smooth) velocity curve preset each time. This still “works” but not an ideal outcome and a bit frustrating.

It doesnt look like the MIDI In/E-Drums is saving this ? thanks, Andrew

    Hello Jord,

I have been doing this as you suggested and have saved a curved preset on the snare channel, however each time I exit and come back in, the preset disappears in the MIDI In/E-Drums section and it goes back to the “straight” velocity curve. I have to reload the “curved” preset again each time.

Is there any way that the “curved” preset can be saved in the MIDI In/E-Drums ?

    thanks, Andrew

Thanks for that Note. I am having problems with smooth transition from closed to open on my DTX900 Hi Hat and see many references to people with Yamaha Hi Hat RHH135 having similar issues in SD3. As yet I have not seen a conclusive answer on how to fix this in SD3 with the DTX Hi Hat

With your settings above using HH Func to MIDI, are you getting a nice smooth transition closed to open – similar to what you get with the DTX module running as stand alone (no SD3). The stand alone Hi Hat is quite smooth in transition.

I love SD3 but he smoothness of the Yamaha Hi Hat in SD3 is not good and a source of frustration.

If you confirm it is all OK I will try what you have suggested.

As another question, has anyone at Toontrack actually connected the Yamaha RHH135 Hi Hat to confirm exactly how it behaves in SD3 and what is the best way to get a smooth closed/open transition ? Thanks
