As a note to anyone struggling with this.  You can use an application called Keyboard Maestro to fix the spacebar issue (sadly, not the playhead position).

I created a macro to send a midi CC message instead of the normal spacebar behavior of stop and play (or creating a space while type).  I then specified the exact window (the Toontrack editor) that needed to be in focus in order for that behavior to be triggered.  This way I don’t lose normal functionality for the spacebar but when the editor is open, I can control both the DAW and editor playback at the same time!

It is very annoying to just between the DAW and the editor for simple tasks like moving the playhead.  Wish it was better integrated because it’s a pain the way it is… and in general I do really like the editor a lot.
