Perfect! That would make sense, since it would decouple SD3 and the DAW. This seems to alleviate the issue! In addition to the double playback, what it as most worried about was not being sure how to leave the MIDI in the SD3 editor alone in case I wanted to edit it later without having to delete/export-import it.
Speaking of which, is right clicking the MIDI and exporting it the most intuitive way to do so? I remember reading somewhere that you could drag MIDI from the editor into somewhere in the grooves window.

Thanks! It looks like I just needed to mute the MIDI region itself, rather than the whole instrument track in the song (which would also mute the SD3 editor).
