I got that error twice and rebooted Windows both times. I’ll try your clicking on the VST. Maybe it’s the system being overloaded.

You can’t add toms to a kit. Ezdrummer 3’s Main and Bright Rooms have five toms, as do at least some of the metal EXPs, and Progressive.
Does it happen with every snare?
Are you running ezdrummer in a DAW or standalone?
Move as many other files as you can do drive D? Sorry if that comes over as snarky. It’s not meant to be.
Have you tried reinstalling that EXP? Product Manager might tell you the problem.
EZD has its own notes for cymbal mutes, also called chokes. Look in the Help menu for something to do with Mapping. It will show you the piano roll notes for the kit you have loaded. Once you know the notes for the cymbal muted and unmuted, move the note in the piano roll. Note that this way will play a mute. It won’t mute an earlier cymbal hit.
