Well there are 88 notes on a piano but there are 127 notes in the MIDI spec. So the MIDI spec actually allows for notes above and below your keyboard. However, you can change any drum/articulation to any MIDI note number in SD3. So, if your DAW allows it, you can insert note numbers outside the 88 note range. I don’t know what DAW you are using but in Cubase is called the ‘draw tool’. So just ‘draw’ the note in your DAW’s editor and then assign the SD3 drum or articulation to that note. See the attached image on how to do this in SD3. In this image the snare is selected in the SD3 drum window and the red circle shows to where to click to change the note number for any of the snare articulations.
Hope this help!

Thanked by: kemccarthy1If you have no Instrument tracks do you mean that you’re using SD3 as a rack instrument in Cubase? I have just tried to duplicate your problem but have been unable to do so. Using SD3 as a rack instrument I can create midi tracks, name them whatever I want and drag SD3 grooves in there without changing the track name. If you have SD3 in an instrument track you should also be able to drag groves into that track without changing the track name as well. What version of SD3 and Cubase are you using? What OS are you on?

I write with a lot of time signature changes as well. If I’m using SD3 grooves I too just do all my editing in my DAW rather than SD3. While it can be done in SD3, it’s very confusing as your time sigs are not lined up correctly and trying to get all the time sigs to match in both DAW and SD3 is rather tedious. I assume that the time sig thing is not the fault of SD3. Rather I just don’t think that information is sent by the DAW to a VSTi.

I didn’t know that. I know, RTFM 🙂
However, my way did work, but your is much, much, (much) easier!

P.S. I should have known that. It seems that with Toontrack products there’s usually an easy and elegant way to do almost anything.

I had a time figuring this out too. What I ended up doing was to put the Urgritone folders into a place that I knew already contained Toontrack MIDI grooves. For me that was C:\Program Files (x86)\Common Files\Toontrack\EZDrummer. I started with EZDrummer and then ‘graduated’ to Superior Drummer. And now that I notice it, all my MIDI grooves are in an EZ Drummer Folder.
So another option would be; in the SD3 grooves tab look to see of you have “User MIDI” folder at the very end of the Superior Libraries list on the very left of that tab. If you find it, right click on it and choose “Open in Explorer” That’s the folder you should put them in.
Also, you could always locate an existing Toontrack MIDI pack in that same list, right click on it, do the “Open in Explorer” thing and drag your urgritone grooves in there.
Just put them in some folder that you know already contains MIDI grooves and then close and relaunch SD3.
Let me know how it works out!

I want to make sure that I understand your question. Pull a SD3 Groove to the SD3 Track lane. Then move that groove to a track in your DAW, edit that track in your DAW and then bring it back into the track lane of SD3? I just did this in Cubase Pro (Windows 10) and it works just fine. So either I didn’t totally understand the question, or Cubase handles this action differently than Logic.
Let me know on this,

You can move your Library folder(s) to another drive any time, if you wish. After you do just go to Settings/Libraries. In that window you will be able to set the pathways to any of your installed libraries. https://www.toontrack.com/manual/superior-drummer-3/9/9-3-settings-2/#9-3-4-libraries-settings-tab

Thanked by: roland ratDo you mean that when you drag a groove to the song track that you don’t see the grid editor? If that’s the case just double click on the groove in the song track and then make sure that the “grid” tab is selected in the resulting window.

You can sort the grooves using any category you choose. In the Grooves window and in the core library at the top of the window I just choose the Genre, Play style, and Type I want for this project/section/whatever. Then sort the grooves themselves by Family. I am now looking at the Family called “4th Floor 180 bpm”. The order I am look at shows Chorus1, Chorus2, Chorus3, etc. for that Family. Same for the other Groove names as well; PreChorus1, PreChorus2, etc.
Hope this helps!

Thanked by: topgoonerNot being available and not loading are two different things. If a drum is grayed out, simply right-click on it and choose the stick/mallet/rod that you want to use for it. Even when some instruments are grayed out they will play another loaded instrument via MIDI rather than just being silent. And you can always assign any drum sound in your library to any instrument (snare toms, kick, etc.) in the kit.

I assume you are using a DAW and not just the Stand-Alone version of SD3.
I don’t have SD3 open right now but I do believe that what you want to do is possible. In the Manual go to chapter 10/30 and look under “Selecting a MIDI Device”. There are other parts of the manual that deal with this as well. (I just searched the manual for “MIDI In”) Basically you want to learn how to setup eDrums in SD3. Activate the MIDI in for SD3 which then allows you to choose a MIDI device as your input device along with MIDI channel, etc. Also remember that you can detach any tab in SD3. This would allow you to keep the grid editor open in a different SD3 window while you record.
If you have any questions let me know and I’ll open up SD3 and find out for sure how to do it.

Thanked by: Karl RixI have to agree on the need for optional color schemes for SD3. I always find it hard to locate the scroll bar in the Grooves window. It’s a tiny dark gray line on a slightly darker gray background. For a long time I didn’t even know it was there.
