Thanks John – I think I fixed it. I copied all of my ezdrummer files from the application support library on my backup drive to the “fresh install” drive. That pretty much broke protools (wouldn’t play files), so I reinstalled protools and everything seems to be back to normal.

Ah ha – I got it. I didn’t notice the first time (too excited to get things going I guess) but I ran the installer again and saw there are 2 separate parts to the installation – was kind of tough to see it over the background graphic. Thanks to you and Scott for your replies.

I seems like it also has to be the first midi track closest to the top. Just highlighting a midi track didn’t seem to work if it wasn’t the one closest to the top.
