From what I can tell based on my research Savatage’s drummer at that time used a Mapex kit with 3 kicks. Not sure on the exact model though.

Ya it definitely seems as if compression is the key, in addition to the reverb choice. I will have to experiment with some of the kits to see if I can get close. There are a couple of presents in the Core library under the metal section that seem to be a good starting point.

With how prevalent the 80s hair metal drum sound is, I am surprised there is not more specific presets for it.
