I agree “Self-generating drums” would be a valuable addition and I’m sure they’ve considered it. However, I wonder if a feature like this might negatively impact their MIDI pack revenue streams. Why buy a MIDI pack if you can just generate new parts based on your audio?

One compromise might be to provide more sophisticated means of locking in the MIDI parts with your pre-existing audio tracks. For instance, I’d love to be able to record a bass guitar part, find or compose drum MIDI that’s 75% there, and click a button to intelligently adjust hi-hat velocities, or get the kick drum lined up with the existing tracks’ time-feel. Maybe some sliders to help dial in the various stylistic choices a good drummer is thinking about … push/pull around the beat, respecting the vocal or other lead instrument, etc.

I really don’t mind programming my drums manually, I like the control and want to make sure everything matches artistic intent … but the amount of time I spend on my drums is way disproportionate to every other phase of production. I’d like to be able to spend more time with my vocals and the other instruments that I actually know how to play. I hope SD4 is a big step forward and helps us all save time, whenever it may come out.
