I like it. I feel it offers a bit more raw sound compared to other libraries, esp. Stories and State of the Art, however I don’t have those. All I can judge by are the sound files of the kits on the website. I felt that especially the kicks in some Real to Reel kits stand out versus the others. I also preferred the ambience of R2R vs. others. This doesn’t mean one can’t get the desired results from other libraries, it just seemed that the way the sound examples for the kits were dialed in are very much to my liking, esp. the clear view kit and the stonewood kit.

Handling wise the mixer is obviously huge with lot’s of channels, but the Killen presets are layed out very well. The data-footprint is quite big due to digital and analog samples, but I feel the tape samples are worth it, they have their own sound.

Getting a bit picky I would have liked a more modern kit to be recorded in the booth also, but I feel the range of kits in the different environments make it possible to dial in a wide range of sounds. It would also have been nice to offer a bit more variety for the cymbals, but the provided ones sound good and if needed I repitched rides before, so you can always make it work somehow. Also there are “Multi FX” in some presets of which I’d like to know more about (some have percentages on the sliders where I’d like to see what exactly is being changed (Q, dB, …)), but I did not find any documentation, yet.

Still this one sounds great for my taste and offers enough versatility, so I’m pretty happy with it. I guess there is no perfect library for everybody unless you get asked by Toontrack to make your own SDX. 😉
