Cheers Jordan, loopback might work for me (or BlackHole)

Thanked by: Bear-Faced CowJordan, the explanation of a software instrument within a wrapper makes sense. There are plenty of drummers using SD3 solely with electronic kits and not going anywhere near a DAW (in fact, there’s direct support for ekits in the SD3 wrapper application) but if there’s a risk of things breaking on core audio updates then that is fair. Apps like Roon have a more frequent update schedule so I guess they might handle such concerns that way.
I suppose another option is to either
Jack, I did reply to that question – “however, yes, the idea is that other applications cannot output audio whilst SD3 is doing so”.
Jordan, there are other applications that can do this, such as Roon.

Jack – where would one do that? I’ve looked around in settings, and done some googling, and without installing third-party software I don’t see a way to effectively “mute” all apps other than SD3. Even doing so with a third-party app is a pain to do so and then restore when done.
I’m getting this error when installing on a new machine, and the above workaround doesn’t help.
I also tried deleting the download and restarting.
Is there something else I can do?
