I was hoping that creating drum notation was going to be an option within EZdrummer 3 – especially as the grid editor looks so easy to use within that. Getting excellent quality notation from easy to compose drum editing is a bit of a holy grail for drummers as most DAWs produce fairly poor drum notation and most budget to medium price notation software seems to have drums as an afterthought. As such, drummers often have to compromise or spend many hours editing the notation before something shareable is created. Numerous issues exist – such as the way that e.g. notation software created for e.g. pianos often create tied notes and split the drum motifs into odd notation. By this I mean that phrasing for drummers is frequently deliberately constructed into groups of quarter note phrases (i.e. 4 in common time, fewer / greater in other time signatures) whereas phrasing for pianos / stringed instruments is less regimented. I honestly believe that this could be a whole new revenue stream for Toontrack if this was developed to the usual amazing quality. Paying $180 for such a thing, within EZD3, would not break the bank for most drummers who teach, produce media or want to see how a programmed pattern appears as notes. For non-drummers the option to compose a part in Toontrack products to then print for drummers to play their music live would also make EZD3 more indispensable for song writers and composers.
