Count me in as wanting this as well. I mean I can figure it out but it ain’t easy and it takes a hell of a lot of trial and error (heavy on the error). What makes it difficult is the SDX’s with large drum kits.

I’d say sure! Follow-me on Facebook. When Fender/Presonus shutdown their online forum and moved it to a Facebook group I tried signing up to Meta. 5 minutes after putting all my valid information in I received a notification that my name violated their online community standards… yeah the name I have had for 68 years violated an algorithm some pimply faced kid, who probably doesn’t even know what machine code is, dragged and dropped into a function, prevents me from joining… bitter? nah… I have more time to play music….

You got lucky. Most groups that are on FB anymore are strictly positive and anything negative even if it’s true gets deleted. The Plugin Alliance group is like that. Besides I never sign up for any forum that wants my full real name as my user name. I used to be on it years ago until they started throttling conservative viewpoints all those years ago. Sad because it was a great way to keep up with my college buddies.

Is the right room for an argument?

I’ve told you once no, you didn’t

    Yes, I did when?

    Just now no, you didn’t

Yes, I did no, you didn’t

Excuse me is the five minute argument or the half hour?

    Oh, just the five minute

I don’t see anything in the TOS that precludes arguments as long as it’s kept civil and there’s no personal attacks. And so far I haven’t seen any. If one can’t argue a point then what’s left?

As to getting back on point I went completely different and purchased Area 33 – downloading now.  I have the hand percussion tools I need in a library for UVI Falcon.

DW has a certain sound as does Gretsch as does Yamaha no matter where each is recorded or by whom.

And yet I have at least five libraries containing the same kits and they all sound different. Your statement is totally baseless. Many great drummers will easily attest to the fact the room will influence how a drum sounds. Change the room and you change the sound and considering that we are also talking about recorded drums, the gear will indeed influence the sound.

    jord

Once again I never said that the room doesn’t influence the sound of a kit and don’t know where you got that. There is a signature sound to a particular manufacturer’s kit that is recognizable no matter where it’s recorded. A DW Collector’s series kit will have a signature sound no matter where played as will a Sonor kit etc.

Speaking of D&D what happened to the product page? They don’t show the maple monster kit anymore – that’s the one that convinced me to get D&D because it’s a DW kit. The page says 9 kits but only shows 8 – 5 in Darkness and 3 in Death.

Reason: cited the wrong kit in D&D

Considering you mention two very different producers and studios, that will greatly affect how you hear the same kit. Just because it has a DW or Gretsch label on it, that doesn’t mean that it’s going to sound the same across libraries. Otherwise, what would be the use for them?

    jord

I mentioned what I did to show that I don’t care what ‘big name’ producer or studio means (to me). Just because they may have done great ‘work’ or the studios had ‘great work’ done in them doesn’t make me want to buy them – I just pulled names out of the hat. I don’t expect a kit to sound the same across the differences. Never said that and don’t know where you picked that up. DW has a certain sound as does Gretsch as does Yamaha no matter where each is recorded or by whom.

Everyone has their reasons for getting an SDX. For me it is more than just the kit itself. It is about who recorded it, how they recorded it and where they recorded it that makes a difference in the music for me. I might have umpteen Ludwig black beauties, but only one of them will fit a song perfectly. Even if it is just one kit on The SDX, if it makes a difference in the song, then it is well worth it rather than wasting my time trying to wedge something else in like a square peg and a round hole. Drive space is relatively inexpensive these days.

    jord

That’s where we differ. I don’t care who recorded it and where it was recorded. Eddie Kramer, Elliot Scheiner – whomever. Avatar Studios, Ocean Way – whatever. The names don’t matter to me. I go with what I know from real life drum kits that I’ve heard and played. The kits are where my heart lies – DW being my favorite with Gretsch and Yamaha etc. further down the line.

Been looking through the product pages and playing the examples of the libraries mentioned here (keep in mind I have D&D already). I seem to find maybe one kit out of each of the libraries that appeals to me and I can’t afford monetarily-wise and space-wise to buy all 3 (SOTA/FoR/Stories). I tend to do stuff that uses 3 and 4 rack toms and would like to not have to add an Xdrum and repitch it to fit. I know I asked about percussion pieces and completely forgot about the percussion library I have for UVI Falcon. Choices choices choices….

I don’t like having my hard drives cluttered with stuff I’ll never use.

Have you tried running without using SD3’s presets? I never do and use what’s in my daw. My lone expansion library is D&D and been able to use it for just about everything except for jazzy stuff ala Dave Brubeck or Vince Guaraldi (the Charlie Brown trio).

BP: while I have your eyes how’s the percussion in Fields of Rock? Looking for small hand percussion for use in SD3 and it seems like a good library (that and the drum kits sound interesting).

Interesting. So how do you load the drums without any presets? Drawing a blank. I’m kinda lazy though. Don’t really want to have to fiddle much with mixers if I don’t have to. Why I was asking about libraries that have presets that already sound really good without having to scale back on all the processing to make them sound a bit more natural.

For D&D I load the default which gives me a DW kit and customize it from there. I don’t use any of the producer or other presets, No fx, nothing from SD3 other than the drums themselves.

You can route a cymbal to its own user mic channel and I do this all the time. I usually use the main OH channel routed to the new user channel also route the cymbal into another OH channel (if it exists) and if another OH doesn’t exist in that kit piece I route an ambient mid channel (or similar) to the OH. I then pan the user mic channel for the cymbal accordingly and decrease OH bleed if the pan doesn’t come out strongly enough. I have never had any issues with phasing. Happy to show the setup if that helps ? I do this for all my cymbals and I normally have more than 10. cheers, Andrew

Yes, please do share screenshots of setup for an example. While I have managed with status quo, always looking to learn another way. Thanks!

Yes Andrew – please share what you have. Thanks.

Definitely weird. The cymbals are a strange situation as at least for the overheads – wish there were separate mics for the cymbals but we all know that never happens in any ‘normal’ situation. The phase differential and bleed would be a nightmare.

To answer question 1 panning is one of those things that is not controllable from the drums tab. There’s all kinds of controls but panning is not one of them. The answer to question 2 might be akin to what you had to do in the renaming situation and look at the file for the saved as instrument and see if there’s something there that relates to panning. Problem is we don’t know for certain where the panning gets it’s parameters from – is it hard coded in the mixer or the instrument itself. I just tried changing the kick drum which is centered in the mixer for a floor tom and it’s still centered so by that I’m thinking the panning is hard coded in the mixer. Is that really it? Not sure. But it sure explains what you’re seeing. To me that would mean that the instrument save as ignores any panning by design. Sucks doesn’t it?

Well, hopefully this thread will at least help someone out if anyone else saves a lot of user instruments. For me, I just find it to be so much easier to save a tom as a user instrument so I don’t have to mess with all the presets as much. However, I’m about to start a new thread posing another question around this, so stay tune tracked. LOL

Let us know here what that thread is.
