Jason: Your problem is that Fusion drive. It’s part spinner and part SSD and performance WILL suffer because of that. That and only 16 gig of ram won’t help you because by default SD3 loads all samples into ram unless you run in cache mode with SD3. Don’t know what SD3 library you’re running but in Death & Darkness for the kit with DW drums the ram used is over 13 gig. Combine that with the Fusion drive and no wonder you’re having issues. I’d suggest upping the ram in that iMac to the 64 gig max and that can be done by you.

Thank You Drumjack52, Worked perfectly and appreciate extra advice. I reset my ins and outs on the computer and my Apollo and followed your instructions. I’m sure it was one little thing I was missing but your help made a big difference. Thanks again, joe
Good to hear that it worked. Working with PT every day things tend to go without thinking about and then you run into someone who’s new to the game and that I don’t mind helping out. The learning curve for PT can be a steep one. One thing to keep in mind that MIDI and audio are two different things and get treated differently. I’d suggest spending some time with the ProTools manual and learn the routings and such.

It’s simple and the same like you would record the output of any other virtual instrument. Create an audio track in ProTools and set it’s input to the output of the vi in question which in this case is SD3. Make sure that SD3 is NOT using multi-channel output in the mixer. I have to asl is the MIDI coming from PT and going to SD3? If so the easiest thing is to put SD3 on an instrument track and the audio output is automatically routed to that instrument track. To record that audio select ‘create a new track’ from the output field of the instrument track and create an audio track. The audio from SD3 in the instrument will get recorded on that new audio track. You record enable the new audio track and start the PT transport using the shortcut key F12 on the computer keyboard.

You should get yourself an external drive and put your libraries on it and point your computers to it. it won’t be any performance issues since all of the kit pieces are loaded into RAM.

Isn’t that only if you have SD3 load all to ram?

Operating system: macOS High Sierra (10.13)Hey Jack Happy New Year!
By default SD3, and all Toontrack sample software for that matter, are designed to load and run from RAM. SD3 can be run in cache mode, but even on a fast SSD, this will introduce some latency as the software goes out to disk, extracts the samples from the .obw file and loads into RAM.

And a Happy New Year back at ya Brad!
I’m used to programs that run cached mode by default. The people I feel sorry for are those on M1/M2 Macs with limited non-upgradable ram. The Death & Darkness kit I have as a default on SD3 load is over 13 gig on it’s own. Thankfully I’ve got 48 gig ram.

Yes, but from what I could understand from Todd’s last reply, he intends to replace the older, smaller drive with the new, bigger drive.
BR,
John
Understood but he’d have to have both drives mounted at the same time to do a drag and drop from one to the other. Even if the drives are external. I used to run a Windows system when I first started working with a daw so I’ve been there/done that with drives.

Thanked by: JohnWill it be as simple as copying the contents of my 1TB to my 2TB and making sure that the 2TB is called E:/ (same as the 1TB was)? Then just plug it in and job is done, or will SuperiorDrummer notice that something has changed and require setting adjustments?
Hi,
since you’re on Windows, it *should* be, yes but since we’re talking about SDX libraries here, it’s no problem re-linking the libraries either inside the SD3 app/plug-in or the Product Manager.
https://www.toontrack.com/manual/superior-drummer-3/9/9-3-settings-2/9-3-5-libraries-settings-tabJust let us know if you need further assistance with this.
BR,
John
Unless things have changed in Windowsland you can’t have two drives with the same drive letter. So the new drive will have to have a different letter.

A couple of questions: how much ram do you have? Are your samples on a separate drive from your system? If so how is that drive connected? Do you have the drives set to sleep after a certain amount of time? The fact that this is happening regularly doesn’t point to a problem with SD3 but possibly your system.

Are you serious that it takes 10 minutes to load of an ssd? How is that drive connected to your system? Internal or external? Hopefully there’s nothing wrong with your system as even on a spinner drive it won’t take 10 minutes to load. For reference my default kit to load is the Death & Darkness one with DW shells and I have it set to load everything into ram from an internal ssd. Less than 30 seconds from SD3 start to fully loaded.
edit for additional: the loading time above is for a 14 gig kit from the ssd which is on a sata card in my MacPro in one of the motherboard card slots.

Thank you. That is good news.
I would upgrade my SSD, however I only just bought this one for my brand new purchase of Superior Drummer ONE MONTH ago!!!
I have become quite addicted to SDXs since then and I need to hit the brakes now!
Keep that small SSD you have now but re-purpose it as a backup drive for your system in an external enclosure. Or use it to put recorded sessions on. Get a bigger SSD – always get more than you think you need.

Thanked by: Bear-Faced CowThis thread has highlighted one of the big things that’s an issue with SD3 and that’s the documentation. Some stuff is disjointed and just not clearly explained. And some stuff is never explained like you can’t make gui changes to the kit layout. Unless your e-kit matches what’s in a preset you’re going to have to deal with compromises (and learn to live with them). Shouldn’t have to go to YouTube for answers. Toontrack should do something that was done when I worked in my day job in aerospace and that is to give the test procedure and/or other documentation to someone who knows nothing about the subject and see how they get along with it. And then make the inevitable changes.
The other thing is people really need to take the time and read the docs before making purchases.
One huge thing I’ve learned is I never use SD3’s effects as all that gets done in my daw. I treat SD3 like I would a physical kit.

It’s not so much an issue with individual SDX’s but SD3 itself. You simply add instruments using the aptly named ‘add instrument’ tab that’s in the upper left of the main screen in the second down toolbar. That instrument will always be in that vicinity – you can’t add anything to the part of the main screen that shows the kit. For example I use Death & Darkness and do stuff that requires 4 rack toms – none of the presets have 4. So I add the 4th via the ‘add instrument’ button. Take care of routing in the mixer and I use a customized MIDI assignment preset and done.
As to the rest one really needs to read the SD3 manual and search on YouTube. Each user’s kit setup is different and that makes it impossible for Toontrack to have presets that work with what one may have. Even if SD3 does have a preset that seems to work be aware that there might be misassignments for the MIDI. For example the General MIDI preset has several errors in it for the rack toms.
