Do you have a mic 21 anywheres in the preset? Anything route to it?

There is a customer service forum on the main forum directory.

Customer service doesn’t always translate to forum upkeep/administration. Those are two separate functions in most companies.

Thanks! I firgured it out. I always run the mics out of SD3 into Ableton into separate audio tracks so I can mix like a real kit. Obviously it makes them audio automatically. So I guesss that was confusing to me that playback was acting differently. Got it. Oops

You just have to remember to render those tracks to audio. They only exist as audio as long as SD3 has access to the samples which are on your SSD. I too run the kit pieces in SD3 out to separate tracks in ProTools to record the audio so I can treat them like a real drum kit. Once I have that audio recorded I no longer need to have SD3 active so to save cpu power I disable SD3.

It’s often overlooked. The Top Search Bar for the site is also for the forum.

That’s something that should be made more clear to people. I know when I see something like that I too think it’s just for searching for product and not the forum. Most forum s/w has it’s own search function. Is there any way of getting in touch with the people who would administer such things around here and ask them to take care of this?

I disconnect the ssd so that I can mix in a different place. Wherever I am. Once the midi is recorded and saved it should play back on ableton or on any device without the ssd connected, no?

No. You have completely missed what I and others have written. MIDI is just instructions on what notes to play and you need an instrument to play those notes. In this case said instrument is SD3. When you record the MIDI you are NOT recording the actual sounds. You could take that same set of MIDI notes and use another vi and it would sound totally different than SD3. So you need that ssd plugged in and running to hear the sounds. When you like what you hear you then render the MIDI to audio using whatever procedure used in Ableton to render MIDI to audio. Is this your first time doing recording on a computer with daw software?

I suggest you Google the word ‘MIDI’.

Excuse my ignorance..So if I record drums into Ableton how would you hear the drums on playback on my iphone etc? Obviously the samples aren’t loaded onto every sonos speaker everywhere? Is there a piece of the program I am supposed to leave on the laptop so it commits the sounds to recorded tracks? I was using the core library like this i thought. I could certainly record the drum midi and hear it on playback without my ssd connected.

Your iPhone probably has a General MIDI synthesizer in it and that’s why you’re hearing playback on it. So you’re NOT hearing the actual sounds from SD3 or any SDX. To hear it in Ableton you need to have that SSD that Fields of Rock is installed on connected and turned on. I don’t know why you disconnect the SSD anyways – care to explain? For that matter where do you have the SD3 core library installed to? Like Brad says MIDI isn’t audio it’s just instructions on how to play the sounds but not the sounds themselves. SD3 is like any other vi (virtual instrument) synthesizer except it uses samples and not synthesized waveforms.

You may want to keep in mind what a gong drum is – see here: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gong_bass_drum

I’m a little confused – are you adding another trigger to your e-kit setup or a physical drum?  If you’re truly going for what a gong drum really is you may want to think about something like a concert tom tuned as low as possible to not have any recognizable pitch. If not then the sky’s the limit as you say. Given the libraries you have I’d look in D&D.

where would you expect default routings to go? You have to start somewhere.

If I were creating this, I wouldn’t create a ton of unnecessary channels and busses from the getgo.  It just doesn’t make sense in a software interface.  I would allow for those channels and busses to be created as needed.  How many drummers do you think are playing in surround sound?  Maybe very few e-drums enthusiasts who like it as a novelty.  For the other 99.9% of people playing e-drums, it’s probably just in the way in getting to the things that matter.  Same for near, mid, and far ambiences.  How many people wants to route a kick mic to a hi-hat channel?  Probably almost no one.  How about an ‘Route instrument microphones’ window that routes to busses instead?  That actually is very practical.  And why are instrument bleeds in a property box, not in some kind of unified routing window?  I understand how it all works, but the practicality and usability of it isn’t good.

You’re missing what has already been written – you can set routings up as you want them. You can route anything anywheres (within reason). Route the mics wherever you want them to be routed. SD3 gives you say many options and impossible to list them all. And there are plenty of videos on YouTube to help you out – you just need to search there for them. You can create busses as needed. It helps people to have some things pre-designed as not everyone wants to start from scratch.

Just to verify, I saw another post with a screenshot of a Mac that had the drop down.  Did something change?

Do you know what revision SD3 was in this screenshot as well as what Mac OS was run?

Not needed on a Mac. The selection for Output Device on a Mac gives you all your possible output devices. There is no ‘Device type’ on a Mac.

Who’s being adverse? No one’s assuming that everyone knows it all. However, if you’re making music, should one not know the basics? I’m on a Mac as well and firing up Logic and recording a MIDI track while looking at the event window is really all there is to it to see if MIDI is working for me. This is 101 stuff.

It’s not about me (or you for that matter). It’s about what the OP can relate to best. If the OP wants to install a utility, great. If they want to check with a DAW, just as good. Either way, if we can help the OP solve their problem, that’s what counts.

    jord

Just trying to help as well. I’ve run into far too many people online that don’t even have the basic knowledge of how to use a vi in their daw. Or knowing zero as to how MIDI works. Because something worked for them they think another program will work the same way without making adjustments. Or even reading the manuals.

A DAW track in omni mode catches everything as well. It’s not that arduous to create a new session and add a track. They really should be second nature.

    jord

Second nature for most but did you ever stop to think that not everyone knows all? We’re dealing with someone who apparently isn’t up to the level that you and I are at. I still rely on snoize (remember I’m on a Mac) when I seem to have MIDI problems. And heaven knows I’ve been at this for decades. Why are you so adverse to trying a simple tool?

The simplest test is a DAW. Almost every DAW will tell you what you are getting. Are you able to record a track in your DAW?

    jord

Not really. With a utility like MIDI-OX or snoize you don’t have to sweat channels or anything else. No creating a session, creating tracks, nothing. One program that’s about as idiot proof as can be. You’ll be able to see all messages. No worry about a message being hidden by a daw track setting.

    Thank you for the reply.

I had some time to install midi view and take some screenshots from sd3.

@drumjack52: I meant that the ad5 is visible under midi devices in sd3 but when I hat a pad, I cant see the hit the Analyzer window in the bottom left of the MIDI In / E-Drums.

This is why I said to get the free utility MIDI-OX and run it in standalone. It will/should show everything coming from your ad5 regardless of MIDI channel. And did you turn off any power savings measures in Windows Control Panel?
