When you say that you instructed things as instructed are you saying you let the installer put things where it wanted? If so take a look at this path on your Mac: Library/Application Support/EZDrummer/MIDI – you should have the grooves there. Also check the path setting in Superior Drummer 3 seee where it’s pointing.

Honestly, I would stay away from Seagate drives, as they are plagued with problems. With Black Friday around the corner 4 terabyte crucial SSDs often go for an excellent price. That and a USB-C enclosure, and you are all set. Mind you with all of the SDXs that I have I may eventually push the limits of that drive.
Formatting the drive is easy. All you need to do is open up Disk Utility and select the drive and click erase. It will ask you what type of file system you want to set up. Just select APFS and you are good to go.
moving your Superior Drummer library is also easy. Drag and drop the containing folder onto your drive and point Superior Drummer to the new location in the Libraries and Path settings. Also make sure that the drive type is set to SSD so that it can load your samples a lot faster.

Unless Apple changed things after you do the drag and drop of the SDX to the SSD the SDX will still be in the original place. So you would have it in 2 places. Just deleted the file that was in the original place.

So for stuff like the SDX, the one that I listed (I’m assuming the second one) you’re saying it’s bad for stuff like SDX, or quick access reading stuff? But if I wanted it for things like, holding my Full projects for my albums or work I do with clients, wouldn’t it be better on something like that? Or would I still be better off not going with something like that?
Storage needs for the areas you mention are different. For SDX’s and other sample material you need an SSD. Faster access and transfer speeds. You really need to read up on such things and for that Google is your friend. You can have a fast connection but the slow transfer speed of a spinning drive will make you question your choice. That spinner is good for sessions, client material and archives. Don’t forget to make backups of your material. More than once they’ve saved me. Backup sessions and client material to a separate external drive that is not connected 24/7 to your computer. I do virus scans and backups once a week. My system drive (SSD) gets a drive, my samples a second drive and session on a third drive which are all spinners. My samples are on an SSD plugged into a slot on my motherboard and the internal sessions drive is a 4TB spinner also internal. The reason I do that is so that if one drive fails the whole system doesn’t go down. If the internal system drives dies I have the clone to work off of and the same for samples and sessions.
One other thing – don’t forget to take care of the incoming AC mains power. Power strips don’t do anything to protect a computer.

Thanked by: Luci_Musix2003Thanks for the reply. Do NOT get that second drive you list – it’s a spinning hard drive and is only good for long term storage/archiving. For samples you really need to stay with some form of SSD. Take it from someone’s who’s been down that road and regretted it. Your MacBookPro – is it Apple Silicon or Intel?
Music software can be huge in space. Something you never want to do is to get even close to filling up any kind of hard drive. I don’t like going more than 80% full. With your next computer if you’re getting a Mac get as much ram as you can afford because it can’t be changed by the end user. And don’t be afraid of getting a refurb from the Apple Store.

Thanked by: Luci_Musix2003It’s a 1TB External Harddrive. Theres nothing wrong with it, it’s just that it has came formatted as NTFS, so my Mac can read off of it, but can’t write onto it. So I’ve just gotta get it reformatted to APFS so that my Mac IS able to write onto it. Should be a simple job, but I am an idiot so I’m gonna wait for my dad (Super smart computer person) to be around so that if I screw it up someway theres someone around to help me fix it.
I’d be interested to know what exact type of drive this is and how it’s connected. That will make all the difference in performance. 1 TB isn’t all that big of a drive for samples. Undoubtedly you’ll be getting more sample libraries in the future whether for SD3 or other programs. I’d go for a minimum of 4 TB. Hard drive space is like money – you can never have too much of either. I’m using an internal 2 TB ssd in my MacPro for samples and wish I’d gone to a 4TB drive.

What Mark King said. I’d be more worried why the drive became unwritable to. What type of drive? A spinner drive in a case? External SSD in a case? What’s the connection of the drive to the computer? Before you have anything done to the drive run Mac disk utility and see what it comes back with. Seeing as how it’s an external drive the problem might not be the drive but the computer port itself.

Thanked by: Luci_Musix2003You are right , I wasn’t clear and sorry about that.here you go..
1) I am not using the audio from TD27 , I made the local control off . sounds are from SD3
2) here is how I connected and layout : I connected my Mac and TD27 via USB port, I have chosen the audio out in SD3 settings as TD27 , then from the master out from TD27 brain , I run a one quarter inch cable as mono into a Roland pm200 monitor and from the out of PM200, I run a xlr out to a mixer , from mixer overall output to PA. From SD3 I use the standard kit with preset available mixer setting , not changing anything
3)yes, I use only 2 channels from SD3 and not changed to multi out
4) reg sounds from Tom’s are not clear , I am using the tones from SD3 and not the Roland’s version one
5) to isolate the problem and to ensure mixer levels is. It messing up , I disconnected the out from PM200 to the mixer and see if it’s better , but doesn’t .
Hope this is clear now.
You’re routing is all wrong. If you’re not using the audio output from the TD27 why are you running a cable from the master out of the TD27 brain to anywheres? Also you don’t describe how you get the audio from your computer to the PM200 or mixer.
Your routing should be as such: MIDI from the TD27 brain to a MIDI port on your computer. Then for audio from your computer you can do this a couple of ways depending on the audio capabilities of the PM200. One way is to go from your audio interface to the PM200 and then from the PM200 to the mixer. THAT depends on whether there’s an audio output from the PM200 that’s parallel to the audio input from the computer. The second way is to have 2 audio routes in parallel – one from the audio interface of your computer to the pM200 along with a second output from the audio interface to the mixer.
I would NOT use the TD27 as an audio interface from you computer.

I’m super excited by this SDX. The kits are so well suited to the kind of music I typically make, it almost feels like Toontrack let me custom-spec an SDX just for me. I’m going to be buying a 3-pack bundle this week, and the whole reason I’m doing that is because I want State of the Art now and I figured I might as well grab a couple of others and get the good price while I’m at it.
You may want to think about also getting Death & Darkness – it’s not just for metal.

As the owner of a DTXM12 I can confirm that Roland hihat controllers will not work with it. The other kitpieces in the Yamaha will work with just about any controller but not the hats. Been there/tried that.
As an aside as a long time sufferer of Yamaha music stuff documentation I have to say it can be confusing.

Thanked by: Yumeko and BradTry changing the level of the kick drum on the main page of SD3. Do you just want to make the kick louder? You could also try changing the velocity curve for the kick on the main page.

Thanked by: coolbreezeonlineThere’s a lot of unanswered questions here. It seems like you’re using the audio from the TD27 brain right? How are you getting the audio from the computer that hosts SD3 to the mixer? Are you using just a 2 channel (left/right) from SD3 in your computer or are you using multi-out from SD3? Does your desk jockey watch the levels at the mixer so that nothing goes into the red (aka overloads)? Whose toms are muffled – the ones from the TD27 brain or from SD3? If you’re using both the audio from the TD27 and SD3 at the same time you could be dealing with phase cancellation between the 2 sources. Taking the output from the PM200 might not be the best thing to do but that depends on how the output of the PM200 is set up. It could be a level issue or even an impedance issue.
There’s no such thing as TMI (too much info) when asking for help. Even the simplest of things that you think don’t make a difference could do so.

For more on Elliot’s work take a look at the September issue of Recording magazine as they have an interview with him that’s mostly based on his mixing work with a smidgen of his recording work. The main idea of the September issue is on monitoring so the interview points that way for the most part.

Thanked by: Andrew Payne and Bear-Faced CowSeeing brushes mentioned makes me wish that TT had a demo of this SDX. I’ve been disappointed in other drum programs/expansions that purport to have brushes and been disappointed. Looking for good swirls on snares for example. Normal snare hits aren’t hard to come by but swirls….. Also cymbal hits ala Steve Gadd would be great to have. It’s amazing the control he has with his brush work. He can get strong hits you didn’t think were done with brushes but seeing the video is proof it’s brushes (I’m talking during the work he does with Eric Clapton).

Thanked by: Raynaldo MartineToontrack advertise this SDX as “acoustic”. What’s so acoustic about this one comparing to other expansions? Would this SDX compliment acoustic music more than the other SDXes for any specific reason? Why would I want to buy it if I’m into acoustic music and have lots of previously released expansions? Thanks in advance guys.

Don’t get hung up on labels. Toontrack could mean acoustic versus electronic drums like from Roland. Take Death and Darkness sdx – it’s not just for metal and works on just about any genre except maybe smooth jazz (think Kenny G). I’ve used it on everything from rock to big band to jazz to progressive (think Rush) to a whole bunch of other stuff. If the demo audio sounds like it could work for you then buy it.

Thanks, Wolfgang! But I can only increase the overall level of a kit piece, e.g. the hithat and not for individual articulations, right?
Drumjack, so? I am just asking questions in my thread. Wolfgang has been really helpful. Why complain in my thread? The ride is loud…if it is barely audible, you either have faulty speakers or it’s your room or you think the ride cymbal is something else. Apart from the china cymbal, the ride is the second loudest kit piece in the video.
- This post was modified 1 year, 3 months ago by LeanderL.
I’m listening on the JBL LSR 308’s in my studio. I know what a ride cymbal is and how it sounds and how loud it can get but with the blastbeats in your video it’s barely audible. All I hear is a ticking sound. Every other kit piece is WAY louder than the ride. It’s physically impossible when playing blastbeats to get really loud sounds from a ride as the hits are never hard enough to get a decent loud sound. They’d have to crank the mics in the mix to get it loud.
But hey what do I know – only been doing this for over 5 decades. Both sides of the glass.
