I’m back in the studio. I was able to “play” the tympani — what a great sound, Toontrack! — but didn’t try transposing an octave up on the midi keyboard. Rather, I went to the edit window (or whatever it’s called), which appears on the bottom half of the StudioOne screen. In Drum Mode (the snare drum icon at the upper left of the edit window), I was able to access all the sounds by clicking on the wrench symbol, which is directly above the list of note names and their octaves. If you click on the letters that appear, you will hear the sounds assigned to them. Then I used the Paint Tool (probably named something else in other DAWs) and clicked in the grid where I wanted the hits. Then you can adjust the volume at the bottom of the graph. After the fact, I noticed that Piano View, the button to the left of Drum View, provides a keyboard that goes well above the notes on an 88-key keyboard and would have given me access to the tympani as well.
Again, thanks everybody for taking the time. You’ve been kind to a piano player, not a given in my experience.
