Alright, I understand your questions, but the decision to use a new computer for this is final.

It‘s a live project where the computer is hidden and built in in a keyboard set up, it will be a Mac mini (the new one is small enough). I don‘t use my main Computer, which is a MacBook Pro with a 4Tb internal SSD (you‘re right about  ‚you can never have too much space‘), because it’s too big and I need it for other things happening at the same time.

This whole setup is an idea I worked a long time on and it’s getting to a more final state now.

Thank you for your input though!

    regards

    Hi Jack,

    thanks again.

Yes, a bigger internal drive would be great but for Mac it is also insanely expensive. And how many drums can you play live? So, why should I carry around tons of sounds, when I just need some of them? For studio work I would totally agree with you, but for this one specific live situation I really don’t need that much.

I did some research now – try and error – moved some obw-files around. So, for the “Decades”-Expansion you could use a similar custom installation like for the core library. For anyone interested:

    There are 64 obw-files

if you remove any of the first 17 files, SD3 informs you (under Settings/Libraries/Paths): No installation info

    If you have installed

soundb1.obw – soundb17.obw  it says: Partial Installation – Basic Setup

soundb1.obw – soundb33.obw it says: Partial Installation – Full Stereo and 5.0 Setup

soundb1.obw – soundb49.obw  it says: Partial Installation – Height Surround Setup

soundb1.obw – soundb64.obw  it says: Full Installation – Full Bleed Setup

Like for the Core Library I just removed parts 34-49. It still says Full Stereo and 5.0 Setup but I could use and adjust all the Bleed-Sounds.

That’s not what I wanted, but at least some improvement.

Thanks for your answers so far.

It is indeed for a live project in Ableton Live.
I would need 2 kits from SD3, Decades and some Percussion on a new second computer. My main computer holds all my SD3 libraries (aprox. 500 GB), but the kits I wanna use live is only about 10-20 GB. I don‘t wanna buy a Mac with a huge SSD, because I will just use it for this live thing.

I know the procedure with the custom install for SD3 core library and I already got rid of all the Surround and high surround files.

But I did hope I could further reduce the installation size to make this work on a 256GB SSD. Too bad…
