There are plenty of differences between EZXs and SDXs. EZXs consist of mainly the key common articulations. They have only a few bleed channels. And if I’m not mistaken, they are 16 Bit Audio, Which will account for a reduced dynamic and velocity range.

That being said, I have a few go to EZX packs that I use because they sound amazing in a mix. They are great for when you need something quick in a mix as what they do contain make them pretty workable in many songs.

    jord

I started writing this and then got called away, but the other 2 insightful answers pretty much cover it.

The difference in sound is subjective at the best of times. EZDrummer EZXs are 16bit as opposed to SDXs that are 24bit. So is there quality difference in sound? In a mix, with other instruments? Maybe, maybe not. If the session is a jazz trio where there’s a lot sonic space for all the instruments, you might notice it. In contemporary music, tracks/intruments are being tweaked to fit in a mix, sometimes within a very narrow band. Will you notice it? I dunno. Functionality, well you have more access to some of the components that make up presets. (EQ Compression, etc). They don’t have the nice EZDrummer graphics when opened within SD3, my customers don’t care about it, and although, as a graphic designer as well, I appreciate the care that goes into rendering the UI it’s the end product that matters. Jord nailed it with what he said. Sometimes the heavy lifting is done ahead of time by Toontrack and with minimal fuss you can get something that works great, 2 channels in, no fuss, no muss.

My own workflow, unless I am looking for something super specific (like the “In The Air Tonight” type drum machine: Hit Maker Machines SDX)…. I usually start composing with EZDrummer and then if I need bigger, deeper, higher, wider…. whatever…. can’t quite dial in the right sound, I’ll take the same track from EZDrummer, drag into SD3 and go from there.

at download i was able to direct library downloads via PM software to my external hard drive.

on the very first install wizard procedure it seemed like it let me choose where to install the libraries… but it still installed them from my external onto my computer hard drive smdh…

ideally the PM software should have an option upfront to guide you through this flow specifically if this is your intention… it’s not clear …

what is the most fool proof way to do this? is there a step by step guide?

    Hi there,

The plugins must reside on your “system” drive. That’s not negotiable. The sound library can be “moved” to your external drive.

The library (I think) is in: Macintosh HD>Library/Application Support/Superior Drummer/

The folder is called: SL-Superior Drummer 3. So locate that folder. On your external drive create a folder called Toontrack then one called Superior Drummer External (or something like that). Copy SL-Superior Drummer 3 to the new location.

    Start SD3, go into Settings > Libraries/Paths

There’s a hamburger menu that lets you change the path to the new location.

Once you have determined it finds the new path and folder, you can delete the old one on your system drive.

    change-path

I did, thanks. Brad, how long does it take your largest preset to load?

Well here’s something funny (funny hmmmm, not funny ha ha)…. system had been up for about a week, running Studio One, multiple sessions, started SD3 in a new session and loaded Legacy of Rock > Oyster Ambience from an M.2 SSD. Around 26 seconds.

Rebooted the system, running SD3 standalone, same preset: 12 seconds.

That is funny “hmmmm”. I imagine something had maybe leaked memory over the time your computer was on, not sure since I don’t know Macs. Thanks for checking the load time – is that the default Oyster Ambience patch or a user preset you edited?

Stock Oyster Ambience patch. I just changed the CPU cores to 2 in SD3 as the new version of Studio One documentation indicates the S1 uses efficiency cores as well as performance cores, so I will try to track whether this improves performance.

My laptop has a Thunderbolt 4 port, but I moved my libraries from my main internal SSD to a second internal SSD, and both are PCIE4 x4 which has a higher max transfer speed than thunderbolt 4. And yes all libraries are set to SSD.

But I don’t think SSD speed is the biggest factor in load time. If you watch disk performance while loading a preset it is sporadic and not maxed out. The max theoretical transfer rate of PCIE4 x4 is 8GB per second – nowhere close to loading a 15GB preset in 20 seconds. The CPU isn’t fully utilized either during preset loading, and neither is memory which has a much faster transfer rate than SSDs anyway. I would love to know where the bottleneck is for preset loading. I suspect the code is not optimized/profiled, and not so much drive or cpu speed.

One thing I have noticed when measuring preset load times is that it’s dependent on what preset was loaded before. If you load a preset from a library followed by a similar one with many of the same intruments the load time will be much faster, I think since it is retainining those intruments in memory. And if the last preset was a really big one it takes longer to clear that out before the new one starts loading. When you said you loaded a 20GB preset in 7-10 seconds, where any of the same instruments in the prior preset? And are you starting the clock right when you click the new preset name, or after the last preset is cleared out? Thanks! I would love to have load times that fast.

    Hi Tom,

Hopefully this doesn’t come off as a dumb question, but… you did change the settings of disk type to SSD in Libraries/Paths, yes?

P.S. The forum won’t let me upload the .ezd3p file. Go figure!!

You have to create a zip file for it.

But…. I didn’t know you were using the audio units version…. I just assumed standalone…. which I believe is vst. I can check that in Studio One….

I’ve had a go at what you’re doing. The instruments in the destination groove are all replaced by the hi-hat if I choose Paste on Selected Grooves > All.

Hey, Mick. While I appreciate your reply, the issue is not with “Paste on Selected Grooves > All.” The issue is with “Paste on Selected Grooves > Hi-hat” (or with other, individual instruments in that command). Thanks.

    Hi there,

Can you save the EZD3 project, archive it (compress .zip) and post it here. I can not replicate the issue on any of my rigs, I have a 3.0.6 version and 3.1 and can not get it to misbehave like that.

Solved ! Tech support did get back and was right on-greatly appreciated!. It seems it is a Studio One issue, I had to navigate to the home icon within a song/this will show a list at the bottom-select program manager/this allows a menu – select show all/ then update plugins… Issue is now I have to do this every time, seems to reset for just the 2 products. Hey Brad within this plugin manager I do not see any way to block or unblock anything so it will not reset, hard to explain without looking at the plug in manager but that is fine for now. I will contact Presonus and dig into that -happy to have my drums and bass back. Hey thanks again for the help!

Glad TT Tech support got things sorted out: FYI

I appreciate the response, and I understand my screenshots won’t help -lol, but wanted people to see what I see.  I have not heard anything from support but granted I put the ticket in on a Sunday, so not expecting much today… I tried to attach a photo file which shows the location which should be correct? All other programs in that VST3 folder work properly. There is also another file location Toontracks recommends, that is at the bottom of the second screen shot ? Been awhile since I have had to set all this up again so I definitely could be missing something but like I said everything else works.. Also all my IK multimedia products worked correctly. Yes I have reinstalled, restarted, blacklist reset- you name it. I question that the EZ drummer (being an instrument) should be in the same VST3 folder as Neural DSP which is an effect.

Sorry if you have already replied to any of my questions (just running on my 1st espresso this morning). Using windows explorer, have you insured that the plug-ins are actually installed in the VST3 folder?

In the the Studio One Browser, have you tried changing the view to”Vendor”, do they show up there?
