Well, like I said, the concept of a gong tom is fairly new to me but having watched some youtube vids, I have a better feel for what they sound like. It’s basically like a glorified oversized floor tom mounted in the air. LOL
I think we can probably all concur that the sounds are not what need the most improvement. IMHO it’s more about convenience features (see my post above) obviously adding an easy way to quickly import multilayered samples would improve the sound of imported samples but you get the idea.

Thanked by: Marcinnvm, figured it out. I didn’t have the main library open. I know if it used instruments from a library that I don’t have you get a message as such so obviously user shared presets is only as useful as the libraries you own. LOL
Lord please add the ability to insert instruments where I want them so all my rototoms are together and all jam blocks etc. it’s so super annoying that if I add a 5th or 6th jam block down the road after having added other drums after the 1st 4 that I cannot insert them logically after the 1st 4. call me Mr. OCD or Anal but it makes it a challenge at times when I’m adding stuff over time. and would love to see an easy way to import multilayered samples similar to the Strike Editor. Right now I just have been importing one sound and using the soft hit level option to make it sound a little more natural. But a tool to import using round robin etc would be awesome. Oh, and the ability to easily copy instruments with all presets so I don’t have to go to the mixer and figure out what settings to apply so they sound consistent. this can be a huge PITA at times, though I have gotten much better at it.

Thanked by: log0utI share the frustration. Not being able to control the order further shows that a lack of ability to rename these x-drums makes things more difficult.
In a similar vein, I also have put 2 posts, one of which is in Requests and Feedback and it relates to the inability to rename extra instruments as they appear on the drums tab and also in mixer tab – under bleed and close mics. Yes I know you can rename the x-drums in the channels but not as above – and if they are not in a “sensible order” (eg 4 rototoms together in order from smallest size to largest size) then very hard to know which is which when assessing bleed.
My two posts are below. If you can add to the Requests/Feedback one then maybe Toontrack will listen.
If you put your issue into Requests/feedback then I will add to this as I agree it is a good idea. cheers, Andrew

responded to yours as well in agreement about renaming
I agree with this idea and had the same issue. When you have a ton of instruments on the side panel, it would be nice if they were able to be labeled so you know what you are looking it right away.
Are you talking about moving things in the main gui? If so that can’t be done. Which SD3 library are you talking about? Didn’t know there were Rototoms in the main library. You’re just going to have to re-order things when addling them. As long as things trigger as you need them then who cares what the gui looks like?

1. This applies to any library, rototoms are in fields of Rock.
2. I care bc when you are assigning pads and setting them it’s a bit annoying to have to scroll down to configure one out of a consecutive series of like pads. I just prefer to have all my pads in a certain order for ease of config and better visibility of what is what.
3. My OCD = see number 2. Lol
Oh well, figured I would ask. I will manage.
So I went back to my original preset and played more with the comp 76. I feel like this is pretty close? though I need to listen a bit to the song. kinda hard to really tell but it sure sounds decent.
Here’s something quick and dirty that I came up with in about 8 minutes, based more on what I was talking about than the actual snare sound from Barracuda. It’s somewhat close, but it was meant to deal more with the Compression/EQ/Tape part of the discussion to help you tweak things to the sound you want. Adjust the attack on the Comp 76 on the snare to get the kind of snap you’re looking for.
Hopefully this takes you in the direction you are wanting to go. The snare is the 402 from Legacy of Rock and with a bit of tuning, it seems to come close.

Thanks so very much! I will play with it. I was actually messing around this morning with some of the compression settings and started to sorta get an idea of how drastically it changes the whole sound. pretty amazing stuff.
Considering that you are pretty new to software drums, and probably audio production in general, I would be more inclined to recommend getting a couple of course that teach mixing, in order to get a handle on the why’s and the how’s. This way, you could be more familiar with the plug-ins you already have. Once you have some of the fundamentals down, you would be in a better position to know which plug-ins would be more suited for you.
That being said, the 1176 was one of the iconic compressors of the 70s. The Comp 76 will come close, if that is good enough. You might be able to sub in the the EQ84 for the Pultec and add in a bit of tube saturation via overdrive. Add a tape saturation on the output.
Fortunately all of these are available within SD3.

Do you per chance have a preset in your SD3 that sorta mirrors what you are talking about? Perhaps If you could share that, I could look at the mixers and visually see what you are referring to?
a lot of it has more to do about the recording and production of the snare than the differences in the model itself. The tuning of the 400 and the way it was hit may give you a closer match. Legacy of Rock SDX is probably the optimal choice since the era of the equipment used to record the snare, is closer to the period of the time when Little Queen came out. Using an 1176 plugin along with a Pultec EQ plugin will get you closer to the Barracuda type sound you’re looking for.

Would you able to expand a bit on those plugins? I’m still pretty new to this whole VST drumming software thing. How does that plugin work to get the sound closer? Not really looking to spend more money on plugins. is there not something within the stock mixers in SD3 that would get this closer? I just don’t know enough about the various compression and other tools or affects etc. to even know what direction to go aside from just trying them and experimenting.
Google has this…
Mike Derosier on his 6.5×14 Ludwig Supraphonic snare on Heart’s – Barracuda.
I did find something under Legacy of Rock that seems close enough that I could tweak. It’s a supraphonic. (shocking) LOL
The one I found had a decent baseline to work from was 5×14″ Ludwig 400 Supraphonic B/O Badge 1970s. Though I do see there is a 402 of same but I feel like the sound on the 400 was better. Not sure if it’s b/c of the presets or what but it just sounds better to me. The article says it was a 402 but again…..
I’m getting mixed results. see attached example where I created new channel for a cymbal and can see the channel in the mixer but when I hit the cymbal, nothing registers on that new channel. some of them work fine and others like this one, it dn register anything on the newly added channel that is clearly mapped for that cymbal.
OK I finally figured out the problem. I had moved my splash to the same mount as the tom so it’s cross triggering. Seems like no matter how I adjust the threshold in edrum, it still triggers the tom. So I either need to acquire ‘yet another’ stand to separate it Or I need to figure out how to dampen the stand so that hits on the splash don’t vibrate the stand and trigger the tom. I took the boom with the splash off the stand and hit it and it did not trigger the tom at all. If I just even slightly tap the top of the stand/mount where the splash boom attaches, it triggers the 42 note which is the tom. Any suggestions on how to make this work so I don’t have to spend money yet again on a stand?
