I think there is a disconnect here or maybe with all the messages this got lost in translation??

Anyway, I know how to use the TD-27 USB MIDI/Audio.  I mentioned earlier that I initially tried to use the TD-27 USB MIDI/Audio but the latency and missed drum hits was really unacceptable, not that even one missed drum hit would be ok.  I researched this and came to the conclusion that it is my gaming computer audio card (integrated into my computer Mother Board MBO).  That is the one weak link with my computer and upgrading to a good audio card (separate PCI-e card) is not worth it given I built my gaming computer 6 years ago and it is coming to its end of life.

Because of the issue with the built in computer mother board audio card, I purchased an external audio interface, Volt 2, since the audio interface in the Volt2 is sort of equivalent to a good computer audio card.

So, to meet my use cases, see use cases below, this afternoon I simply added a switch that will switch my speaker system from the TD-27 (Master R+L) to the Volt2 (Monitor R+L Simmons speakers) and Volt2 Headphone OUT for the Klipsch speakers, use cases 2 and 3 .  For use case 1 will not switch the speakers, simply leave the Simmons speakers connected as they are to TD-27 Master R+L, and leave the Klipsch speakers connect to the TD-27 Headphone jack.

PS-If you are wondering why I use two different speaker systems connected to my TD-27, the Klipsch speakers cover the higher frequencies and the Simmons DA-2112/DA-2110 cover the mid. frequencies.

Use cases:

1 – Play TD-27 kit w/o any modification to the TD-27 native sound

Speaker System:       Klipsch speakers connected to TD-27 Headphone Jack

Simmons DA-2112 and DA-2110 (Simmons Sync. cable connects DA-2112 and DA-2110) and they are connected to TD-27 Master R+L

NOTE: TD-27 Local Turn On

2 – Play TD-27 kit and listen to EZD3 modified sounds

TD-27 MIDI OUT to Volt2 MIDI IN; Volt2 USB to GORT1 / EZD3, Volt2 Audio (Headphone Jack) to LZSIG INPUT, LZSIG OUT to TD-27 MixIn

Speaker System:       Klipsch speakers connected to Volt2 Headphone jack

Simmons DA-2112 and DA-2110 (Simmons Sync. cable connects DA-2112 and DA-2110) and they are connect to Volt2 Monitor Jacks (R+L)

NOTE: TD-27 Local Turn Off

3 – Play TD-27 kit and use Reaper/EZD3 (plugin) to Record Drums (all tracks) and Music

            TD-27 MIDI OUT to Volt2 MIDI IN; Volt2 USB to GORT1 / EZD3, Volt2 Audio (Headphone Jack) to LZSIG INPUT, LZSIG OUT to TD-27 Main

Speaker System:       Klipsch speakers connected to Volt2 Headphone jack

Simmons DA-2112 and DA-2110 (Simmons Sync. cable connects DA-2112 and DA-2110) and they are connect to Volt2 Monitor Jacks (R+L)

NOTE: TD-27 Local Turn Off

Regarding “virtual mixer”, so Reaper with VST plugin EZD3 (or other VST plugin), would this be adequate for the “virtual mixer” you have referred to?

Tried the TD-27 USB option, latency or missed drum heads hits, and / or pops.  My computer can keep up, only requires 15% of the CPU / GPU resources when EZD3 Sample Rate=192000 and Buffer size 32 samples (0.2ms).  The built in MOBO sound card is terrible and this causes the issues with latency, etc.  I could replace the MOBO based sound card with a quality sound card, but I thought the external Audio Interface would be a better option given that I built my computer 6 years ago and a new build is on the horizon current build (Intel i9-9900K CPU 3.6GHz; Geforce RTX 2080 GPU; Gigabyte Z390 Aorus Pro MBO).  So, that would be the time to purchase a good sound card, not now.

Only reason I was trying to send audio back to the TD-27 is my speaker system is connected to the TD-27.  So, to minimize the unplugging and plugging of my speaker system from TD-27 to Volt2 is to take the audio out from Volt2 and use the TD-27 Mix in which will play my EZD3 shaped sounds via the speaker system connected to my TD-27.

Does SD3 provide more options output selections / options than EZD3?  That is, could I use SD3 to change the output from Master L+R to MIDI messages (notes, control change, program change, sysex etc.)?

End Goal:

Normally when I practice I will not use EZD3/Reaper, I will simply use the Roland TD-27 native sounds and output that over my speaker system or just use headphones to listen to my edrums.  I am attempting to have a setup that will require minimal system setup change when I do use EZD3/Reaper to make Drum Covers.  Secondary goal, to occasionally use TD-27/Volt2/EZD3 (shaped sounds) output to my speaker system when others are listening to my drumming.  Since my speaker system is connected to my TD-27 module I am forced into unplugging my speaker system from the TD-27 and plug the speakers into the Volt2 audio.  

My setup (EZD3 not using Reaper as yet):

Roland TD-27 module MIDI OUT to Universal Audio Volt2 MIDI In, Volt2 USB (MIDI I think) to gaming computer running EZD3 (this will become Reaper with EZD3 plug in once I have everything working with EZD3).  EZD3 MIDI Setup: Audio Device=ASIO; Device Universal Audio Volt; Active output channels=Monitor L+R; Sample Rate 192000 Hz; Audio Buffer size=32 samples (0.2ms); Active MIDI Inputs=Volt2.

NOTE: my computer CPU/GPU only uses about 15% of its CPU / GPU resources, so the high Sample Rate and Lowe Buffer size is not an issue.

What I would like to do is change EZD3 active output channels from “Monitor L+R” (Audio over USB) to a MIDI OUT (over USB) and route the MIDI OUT through the Volt2 MIDI OUT to my TD-27 MIDI IN.  The option to output ED3 MIDI is not an option EZD3.  Can’t find EZD3 support other output options.  Does SD3 support more output selections beyond those available from ED3 or maybe Reaper will allow me to output MIDI.

Reason I am going through this:

One, to come up on the learning curve for VST/DAW and use of MIDI; Two, so I can use the TD-27 as an audio output device. I realize I can do something like Audio out of Volt2 to Mix In on the TD-27, but again I want to thoroughly understand my options for interconnections.

Not for this forum, but what I also need to understand is how the Volt2 MIDI OUT works with a setup like mine.  Does the Volt2 simply loop back the MIDI IN to the Volt2 MIDI OUT?  Is there a way to take the USB audio sent from EZD3 (Monitor L+R) to Volt2 and convert it to Volt2 MIDI OUT so I could send Volt2 MIDI OUT to the TD-27 MIDI IN?

Doug / Brad, again thanks for info.  I will try your idea of recording and see if MIDI is recorded on those occasions when I hit a drum pad no sound played back from EZD to Roland TD27.

Also, would like to try the Audio Interface but I am not clear on how to connect it.  If I use my UA Volt2 Audio Interface, as Doug suggested, I do not understand how that can potentially improve the issue of latency?  The UA Volt2 has MIDI In/Out, USB-C and of course Monitor Direct (on or off).  Connecting the Audio Interface, I am confused on how to set this up and test this configuration.  : Maybe MIDI out from TD27 kit to UA Volt2 MIDI in, then either MIDI out from UA Volt2 to a MIDI to USB cable (or USB out from UA Volt2) to my computer??

Any thought or additional suggestions would be appreciated.

15dec24: Created and account, downloaded Toontrack PrdMngr, downloaded ED3, tried to launch get the error code “sound library issue” tried rescan and restart no change!  Mean while my 10 day trial is evaporating and no chance to evaluate this product.

The competition is looking better everyday!

How about some help Toontrack.
