Hi all,
Has anyone here hooked up a Zildjian Alchem-e kit to SD3 or EZD3? I am having a really tough time getting things fine tuned so I can record with it.
Since there currently is no preset by toontrack I have opted to leave mine as “default” and then try and customize each instrument separately which has caused some frustration. Some of this may be due to my inexperience with the software, but I also feel like there may be some things this module is doing that SD3 is may not be receiving correctly via midi.
I’ll just list one or two issues here for now instead of listing them all and maybe if I’m able to get this solved, it will lead to an aha moment to help me with fine tuning other items.
When I step on my hi-hat pedal to close the hi-hat or doing any type of stepped hi-hat rhythm, one of the other crash cymbals will always hit at the same time. I tried disabling the china cymbal that shows up in the kit I was experimenting with because in the SD3 interface that china is right near the hi-hat. But, then it just moves to the next cymbal and continues to hit that cymbal as I close the hats.
Another area where a cymbal randomly crashes is when I hit the first Tom on my kit. It’s not every time, but it always seems to be when do a quick hit on it.
I have tried programming each piece over and over and even when using the learn button and hitting the part of the kit I want the software to learn, it will trigger that part but also still hits the cymbal.
I’m hoping someone with more experience with SD3 has attempted to use it with the Alchem-e kit and may have some suggestions or even some other general things I can try that I haven’t already.
Thank you!
I don’t have the Alchem-e cymbals but have been considering using them instead of the noisy and unreliable DWe cymbals. How do you like them?
In terms of midi for them, since there is no built-in mapping you will need to make your own midi mapping file and save it in SD3, using it on every kit. You may need to make modify and save another copy of it for different SDXs as well if you have more than one. So in the mid mapping setting window go through every single articluation on every single drum and cymbal on your kit and make change the mapping as necessary to make it the right sound (snare center/edge/rim shot/side stick, for cymbals: bell, bow, edge, mute, for toms center, rimshot, rim, etc…). It’s a lot of work, but once it’s done it’s done and you just reuse that mapping.
DWe six piece kit, Roland BT-1s/eDRUMin, RME Fireface interface, JH Audio IEMs w/Fiio Amp, Porter & Davies transducer, Razer 16 laptop, SD3 (State of the Art, Stockholm, Hitmaker, Legacy of Rock, Decades, Death & Darkness, Fields of Rock, Stories)
From what it sounds like, stepping on your hi-hat pedal is meant to trigger a foot splash articulation. You might want to open your MIDI monitor property box to see what is being fired when you step on the pedal. from there, you can either re-map the note in question to either the proper articulation or silence it altogether in the MIDI/E drums settings.
