Wav to Midi?

Hi all,

I’m very new to pc recording so please be gentle and forgive what may appear to many of you I’m sure, a daft question.

I have EZDrummer and have just started using Cubase. I also have a whole load of additional drum samples which are in WAV files. How can I get these drum samples into EZDrummer’s “My Midi files” folder so I can use these in Cubase too.

I’ve looked online for freeware Wav to Midi converters but nothing seems to work.

I’m using Win7 if that makes any difference.

When you say ‘additional drum samples’ are they single sounds, or drum performances, grooves (like loops)?
If they are single sounds (kick, snare etc) then midi is irrelevant. You also can’t import your own drum sounds into EZdrummer.
If they are audio drum grooves, you could try and extract the groove from audio to midi (using some kind of plug-in) and import those midi drum grooves into your EZdrummer groove library.
Wav’s are audio (sound), midi is performance information (no sound).

Thanks for the reply. They are drum loops, i.e performances lasting around 15 seconds. What plug-in would you recommend and where can I get it?

Well, if you would find a copy of Toontrack’s discontinued ‘Drumtracker’ and don’t mind working with a discontinued product, it does the job very well (it is not 64-bit, btw).

Other products are Massey’s DRT (for Pro Tools), Slate’s Trigger, apTrigga, KT Drum Trigger, Melodyne and Drumagog.

The above advice is if you want the performance in your audio loops to be converted to MIDI (so you can add them into the “MY MIDIFILES” folder). This may still involve a bit of manual instrument changing and fiddling with whatever you use. I presume using the audio loops directly is no-go here? Are they plain wav or Rex?

You can always place the audio loop directly into your DAW and place MIDI notes over the audio (you can usually see where the beat transients are) -you’ll know when thet’re on-target because the sound will stop flamming. Once in the MIDI domain you can adjust beat velocities.

More fiddly and not good if you have dozens to convert, but you could do it without dedicated software.

The new version of Abelton Live (9) does this well – drum audio to midi.
Obviously, it’s a waste of money unless you would like a new DAW.
Drumtracker – as mentioned above.
A few of the other drum replacer plug-ins will translate audio to midi data. Definitely Slate’s Trigger, I think Drumagog too.
Again, none of them are particularly cheap or free.

Do you know where can I find a copy of Drumtracks? I read about it anda it seens to solve the problem I have.
